General Information

Peique Viñedos Viejos 2022 is born in the rolling landscape of Valtuille de Abajo, among hillside plots covered with old vines and slate soils. This is a Mencía that speaks with a Bercian accent, expressing the deep connection between land, climate, and tradition. It represents the spirit of a family that has worked these vineyards for generations and founded Bodegas Peique in 1999 to bottle their own legacy. The grapes come from vines over 80 years old, cultivated in small plots at varying altitudes on clay soils with pebbles, facing northwest and west in Valtuille de Abajo. With limited production and fully manual harvest, this wine captures the essentials: vibrant fruit, freshness, balance, and mineral character. Aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, it gains structure and complexity without overshadowing the varietal identity. This wine not only reflects the greatness of Mencía, but also the evolution of a denomination that continues to surprise the world with its deep authenticity. It has not yet been reviewed by the critics, but as a reference, the previous vintage — Peique Viñedos Viejos 2021 — received 91+ points from renowned critic Robert Parker and 90 points from the Peñín Guide. Peique Viñedos Viejos 2022 is a red wine with the soul of a modern classic — ideal with traditional dishes like botillo del Bierzo or cured cecina, as well as more contemporary preparations of meats, mushrooms, or even rich, fatty fish.

Creators' opinion

The winery

Bodegas Peique
The Peique surname has been linked to wine since the 1930s, but it was not until 1999 that the three current generations of the family decided to establish their own winery in the town of Valtuille de Abajo, their hometown, in whose surroundings it is said that the ancient Bergidum Flavium, the pre-Roman city that gives its name to Bierzo, was located. Bodegas Peique began its journey in facilities borrowed from friends, and almost 20 years later, it has its own premises and a vineyard of 40 hectares, including both owned and controlled plots from neighboring winegrowers. Currently, it produces around 215,000 bottles annually.
