General Information

Peique Viñedos Viejos 2020 is the latest vintage of the most popular wine from one of the historic wineries of the D.O. Bierzo and a driving force behind the renewal that has placed this region among the leading ones on the world stage. Peique Viñedos Viejos is made from mencía grapes grown in Valtuille de Abajo, the heart of the Bierzo Denomination of Origin. The fruits come from vineyards with an average age of 50 years, with lower production but great quality and concentration of the fruits, which give wines that are pure terroir, as they extract with their deep roots all the essence of the slate soils of the region.

The name Peique has been linked to wine since the 1930s, but it was not until 1999 that the current three generations of the family decided to start their own winery in the town of Valtuille de Abajo, their hometown. Today, Bodegas Peique is nourished by a vineyard of 40 hectares -both owned and controlled- that is manually worked. Most of the vineyards are of the mencía variety and are located on slopes. Leading the winemaking task is Jorge Peique, one of the most renowned technicians in Bierzo.

Peique Viñedos Viejos 2020 (D.O. Bierzo) is perfected with 12 months aging in French oak barrels and another 12 months in the bottle. Ideal to accompany rice with mushrooms and vegetables, roasted meat, botillo del Bierzo, and cecina de León.

Tasting notes

Intense black apricot color.

With a very intense and clean nose, it shows aromas of wild berries, black fruit, along with balsamic and mineral notes; toasted and spicy memories also appear.

On the palate, it is tasty, broad, fresh, with a fruity and aromatic passage, fluid and friendly. Persistent finish.

The winery

Bodegas Peique
The Peique surname has been linked to wine since the 1930s, but it was not until 1999 that the three current generations of the family decided to establish their own winery in the town of Valtuille de Abajo, their hometown, in whose surroundings it is said that the ancient Bergidum Flavium, the pre-Roman city that gives its name to Bierzo, was located. Bodegas Peique began its journey in facilities borrowed from friends, and almost 20 years later, it has its own premises and a vineyard of 40 hectares, including both owned and controlled plots from neighboring winegrowers. Currently, it produces around 215,000 bottles annually.
