General Information

Peique Mencía 2022  is the most authentic expression of the star grape variety of El Bierzo in a fragrant, tasty and velvety wine that hasn’t been barrel aged. These characteristics make it one of the best wines in the country in its category, as demonstrated by the distinctions it’s earned, year after year, notably the designation as best young red of 2016 by the readers of the Guía Gourmets.

The magnificent Mencía grapes whose characteristics shine through in this varietal wine came from the vines about half a century old that Bodegas Peique own in the municipality of Valtuille de Abajo, at an altitude of between 450 and 580 metres. The resulting red, which was aged for 2 months on the fine lees in stainless steel vats and matured for a further 2 months in the bottle before being released for sale, is a straightforward wine with pure varietal flavours.

Tasting notes

Cherry-red with deep violet hues.

Prominent notes of ripe red fruit, blue flowers and minerals in the nose.

The winery

Bodegas Peique
The Peique surname has been linked to wine since the 1930s, but it was not until 1999 that the three current generations of the family decided to establish their own winery in the town of Valtuille de Abajo, their hometown, in whose surroundings it is said that the ancient Bergidum Flavium, the pre-Roman city that gives its name to Bierzo, was located. Bodegas Peique began its journey in facilities borrowed from friends, and almost 20 years later, it has its own premises and a vineyard of 40 hectares, including both owned and controlled plots from neighboring winegrowers. Currently, it produces around 215,000 bottles annually.
