An oenological indulgence of extremely limited production
Peique Garnacha Tintorera 2011 is the most unique wine produced by Bodegas Peique. The only red wine from the Bercian winery not based on Mencía stands out for its mineral character and longevity. A small gem of which only 700 bottles were produced.
It is the winery's rarity, a long-matured idea that materialized into a fantastic wine, with Peique Garnacha Tintorera 2011 being its first vintage. The cutting-edge winery from Bierzo presented in 2017 its only single-varietal red wine made with a grape different from the traditional mencía, and now Vinoselección can offer you some of the few bottles still available of this small enological treasure with extremely limited production.
The garnacha tintorera has been growing in the Peique family vineyards for over 80 years, scattered across different plots among the mencía vines. In the past, when wines were sold in bulk and the intensity of their color was the most sought-after quality, this variety was used to tint them, thanks to its characteristic violet-hued pulp.
The garnacha tintorera used by Bodegas Peique to craft this wine is characterized by its robustness, power, and high acidity. These traits were masterfully tamed through a meticulous and prolonged aging process of 20 months in 500-liter French oak barrels, followed by 24 more months of resting in the bottle. After this time, a deep, meaty, and mineral red wine was born. Don’t miss it.
Tasting notes
High layer and striking currant color.
In the olfactory phase, intense aromas of cherry and sour cherry predominate at first, giving way to secondary notes of hinojo, violet, and slate.
Deep and vibrant on the palate, where its acidity and balance stand out. Tactile, fleshy, spicy, with its own personality and mineral character. Authentic.
The Peique surname has been linked to wine since the 1930s, but it was not until 1999 that the three current generations of the family decided to establish their own winery in the town of Valtuille de Abajo, their hometown, in whose surroundings it is said that the ancient Bergidum Flavium, the pre-Roman city that gives its name to Bierzo, was located. Bodegas Peique began its journey in facilities borrowed from friends, and almost 20 years later, it has its own premises and a vineyard of 40 hectares, including both owned and controlled plots from neighboring winegrowers. Currently, it produces around 215,000 bottles annually.
