General Information

The magnificent mencía that shines in the single-varietal wine Peique Cova de la Raposa 2018 originates from the 80-year-old vineyards of Paraje Cova de la Raposa, which Bodegas Peique owns in the municipality of Valtuille de Abajo, at an altitude between 520 and 550 meters.

The production began with the traditional crushing of one-third of the mencía grapes and the addition of two-thirds of destemmed grapes. After spontaneous fermentation in open 500-liter French oak barrels, the wine was aged for 12 months in used barrels before bottling. The result is a fresh and lively red wine, with good structure, round and polished, which has the potential to evolve in the bottle for up to ten years.

The winery

Bodegas Peique
The Peique surname has been linked to wine since the 1930s, but it was not until 1999 that the three current generations of the family decided to establish their own winery in the town of Valtuille de Abajo, their hometown, in whose surroundings it is said that the ancient Bergidum Flavium, the pre-Roman city that gives its name to Bierzo, was located. Bodegas Peique began its journey in facilities borrowed from friends, and almost 20 years later, it has its own premises and a vineyard of 40 hectares, including both owned and controlled plots from neighboring winegrowers. Currently, it produces around 215,000 bottles annually.
