Avelino Vegas Áureo 2018 is the flagship of Bodegas Avelino Vegas, the latest project launched in the D.O. Ribera del Duero by one of the most important wine groups in Castilla y León. It is a signature red wine where the tempranillo shines in all its splendor, and it owes its name mainly to the perfect proportion of the concrete eggs where the wine has undergone part of its aging.

General Information

Native of Santiuste (Segovia), the origins of Avelino Vegas as a quality wine producer date back to 1950. In 1993, they ventured into Ribera del Duero to establish Bodegas Fuentespina, and it is in this same denomination of origin where they have launched their latest project: Bodegas Avelino Vegas, a ‘boutique winery’ in the château style dedicated to the production of signature and high-end red wines.

Bodegas Avelino Vegas is located between Peñafiel and Pesquera de Duero, one of the best areas of the D.O. Ribera del Duero. There, they have XX hectares of Tempranillo and modern, functional facilities with views of the Peñafiel Castle. The goal of this project is to produce very personal and high-quality wines, with the guarantee of the tandem formed by winemakers José Manuel Corrales and Cristina Vegas.

Avelino Vegas Áureo 2018 owes its name to the golden ratio, an irrational number that represents the perfect proportion, the golden ratio. Among the objects that maintain this proportion are the concrete egg-shaped tanks where this wine is aged, a complementary aging to the 14 months in French oak barrels that confer even more complexity and elegance. Enjoy this wine with a roasted lamb shoulder, roast suckling pig, or a selection of Manchego cheeses.

Tasting notes

Cherry black in color, with a deep hue.

It presents a complex nose that shows mineral and black fruit aromas along with balsamic notes and English chocolate, as well as sensations of red licorice and noble woods.

On the palate, it is balanced, flavorful, broad, with good fruit character and freshness. It has a pleasant passage, noble tannins, and excellent woods. The finish is long and persistent.

The winery

Bodegas Avelino Vegas

Originally from Santiuste (Segovia), the Vegas family began their journey in Rueda in 1950. In 1993, they inaugurated Bodegas Fuentespina in Ribera del Duero, the same region where, in 2016, they created Bodegas Avelino Vegas.

The Vegas family has always been committed to producing two high-end wines. From an oenological perspective, it represents a very important qualitative leap, the result of many years of experience in Ribera del Duero, which they sought to leverage to create the family's flagship wine. Hence, it bears the name Avelino Vegas and his signature.

Bodegas Avelino Vegas oversees 20 hectares of vineyards in Moradillo de Roa, Tubilla del Lago, and Quemada and produces approximately 52,000 bottles of their two high-end wines: Avelino Vegas Áureo and Avelino Vegas 100 Aniversario.
