Pago El Espino 2023 reflects all the uniqueness of Ronda's red wines, creations that originate from high-altitude vineyards but at the same time exhibit a certain Mediterranean influence due to their close proximity to the sea. Bodega Cortijo Los Aguilares showcases its mastery in winemaking with this wine, a testament to the perfect adaptation of the petit verdot, syrah, and tempranillo varieties to the Serranía de Ronda. A deep, fresh, and complex red wine that does not disappoint.
In the aromatic phase, it appears deep and mature. Notable are the notes of forest fruits, followed by balsamic touches over a spicy background.
On the palate, it is fresh, long, and complex, qualities that suggest excellent development in the bottle. Ready to enjoy now and in the coming years.
Creators' opinion
On the nose, Pago el Espino is a symphony of ripe fruit, with refreshing nuances and subtle notes of toast and spices. The use of large-format barrels for aging allows the wine's fruity expression to be preserved, providing roundness and complexity that translate into a smooth, fresh, and very long finish.
Pago El Espino is a mountain wine from unique vineyards that are carefully tended throughout the year to achieve the maximum expression of the surrounding landscape in the glass.
In 1999, José Antonio Iriarte and his wife Victoria San Gil acquired an 800-hectare estate with crops of cereals, olive trees, and vines, located at an altitude of more than 900 meters above sea level, in the heart of the Serranía de Ronda. That was the origin of Bodega Cortijo Los Aguilares, a winery that is currently one of the most prominent in the D.O. Sierras de Málaga.
In this incomparable setting, with the Sierras de Nieves and Grazalema as a backdrop and benefiting from a unique microclimate, lies the 19-hectare vineyard of Bodega Cortijo Los Aguilares, where native varieties such as tempranillo are combined with foreign grape varieties that have achieved perfect adaptation, such as pinot noir, merlot, syrah, cabernet sauvignon, and petit verdot. From all of these, and with meticulous attention to detail—from organic farming in the vineyard to a winemaking process that blends technology and tradition—they craft high-quality wines that express the unique terroir from which they originate.
