In the words of Bodegas Montecillo, Montecillo Edición Limitada 2019 is "the most contemporary yet timeless wine of the brand." With the aim of expressing the most authentic personality of Rioja, its winemaker, Mercedes García, carefully selected the best clusters of tempranillo and graciano, vinified separately until the final coupage, after 25 months of aging. A luscious and seductive red wine that pairs perfectly with red meat and game dishes.

Montecillo Edición Limitada 2019 is the wine from the winery that most reflects the imprint of the winemaker Mercedes García Rupérez, as in each vintage she provides a personal interpretation to offer the most modern Rioja from the winery.

Its composition includes tempranillo and graciano. The tempranillo comes from estates located in the Fuenmayor area (Rioja Alta), on one of the highest hills in the municipality, over 40 years old, planted in dryland and bush-trained vineyards. The graciano comes from Rioja Oriental, from the Tudelilla area, where it traditionally achieves excellent ripeness. Both varieties were hand-harvested, fermenting in small-capacity stainless steel tanks with constant pump-overs.

The malolactic fermentation took place in underground cement tanks. Subsequently, the tempranillo wine underwent an intermediate aging in mixed oak and French oak barrels with medium toasting. The graciano aging lasted the same number of months, but in barrels with medium-plus toasting. After the final blending, the wine returned to the barrels for an additional 6 months for greater varietal integration. Once bottled, it was refined in the winery for a minimum of two years before being released to the market.

Founded in 1874 by Celestino Navajas, the wines of Bodegas Montecillo enjoy a strong market position, maintaining a consistent line that offers credibility. The winery is located in the heart of Rioja Alta, in Fuenmayor, and works with a selection of the best vineyards from the sub-region. Mastery in long aging is one of its main hallmarks. This aging takes place in the underground winery, where the wines mature under perfect conditions.

At the helm of the winery's winemaking is Mercedes García Rupérez. Her expertise ensures a bright future for this historic winery.

The winery

Bodegas Montecillo

Bodegas Montecillo was founded in 1870 by Celestino Navajas Matute, being the oldest winery in the municipality of Fuenmayor and the third oldest winery of the D.O.Ca. Rioja. Since 1973, Montecillo has belonged to the Osborne Family, and today it has become one of the benchmarks for long-aged wines. It produces the Clásica range (Crianza, Reserva, Gran Reserva, a white and a rosé), signature wines, and the Viña Monty range, which represents the most avant-garde winemaking trend of the centenary winery, committed to traditional production with a renewed approach.

Bodegas Montecillo has underground cellars that house vintages dating back to 1926, as well as an impressive manual bottle rack.
