Matsu El Pícaro 2025 conveys swagger from the first glance. A red wine D.O. Toro made from Tinta de Toro, fresh and juicy, that signs Matsu with its younger, more direct and daring style. Critics have already fallen for this wine and, for now, Guía Peñín has rated it 90 points.
Matsu El Pícaro 2025 is a red wine from the D.O. Toro produced with 100% Tinta de Toro. It originates from a manual harvest and a very respectful winemaking process, with spontaneous fermentation in concrete tanks with indigenous yeasts, malolactic fermentation in the same tanks, and ageing of 2 months on the lees which rounds out its profile without losing its nerve.
Originating from old, low-yielding vines, naturally cultivated on sandy soils with a high component of rocky granite. The 2025 vintage was marked by climatic contrasts, with a wet winter and a very hot summer that accelerated ripening, though the grapes reached the winery with excellent health and balance.
Matsu is a project that pays tribute to several generations of viticulturists of Toro and to the wisdom with which they have tended the vines for decades. Matsu El Pícaro 2025 embodies the youth within that story: strength, audacity and bravado, with an image as direct as its philosophy.

Winemaking
This red wine has been produced in a winery, with spontaneous fermentation in concrete tanks, where native yeasts drive a process faithful to the character of Tinta de Toro. In those same tanks it then undergoes malolactic fermentation, which helps to round out its profile without losing freshness or energy. The work is completed with a gentle filtration and non-aggressive clarification, to preserve all the fruity expression and that direct, bold and youthful edge that defines the wine.
Aging
Matsu El Pícaro 2025 has been refined for two months on its lees in concrete tanks, a short ageing that preserves all the freshness, boldness and juiciness of its 100% Tinta de Toro.

Bodega Matsu is a project by Vintae, a wine company born in La Rioja in the late nineties. Starting in 2003, it began expanding to other winemaking regions beyond Rioja, producing wines in Ribera del Duero, Ribera del Queiles, and Navarra. Shortly after, attracted by the extraordinary characteristics of the D.O. Toro, Vintae’s technical director and winemaker, Raúl Acha, started exploring the vineyards of Toro. What drew him to this region was its tradition of minimal intervention in the vineyard, made possible by the denomination’s climatic conditions, with very low humidity and sandy soils. Added to this tradition is the rich heritage of old vines of extraordinary quality, as well as the strength and character of the Tinta de Toro grape.
In 2006, the first vintage of Matsu was crafted, initially with just one wine: El Viejo. Two vintages later, two more wines were added: El Pícaro and El Recio. Matsu, which means "to wait" in Japanese, is a tribute to all the winegrowers who, over generations, have worked the vineyards with dedication, wisdom, and sacrifice. The labels, featuring a young man, a middle-aged man, and an old man, represent three of these generations and correspond to each of the wines.
