General Information

Matarromera Gran Reserva 2018 is made from Tempranillo grapes grown in the San Román and Las Celadillas estates, iconic vineyards of Matarromera, located very close to the winery in Olivares and Valbuena de Duero. These are vines planted in 1993 on a steep limestone slope by the Duero River, covering just over 6 hectares, with a south-facing orientation and a limited yield of 4,000 kg/ha.

The 2018 vintage was characterized by a cold and rainy winter and spring, with several episodes of spring frosts, followed by a hot and dry summer. The resulting wines are fruity and fresh with great aging potential, like this one.

After manual harvesting in 12 kg boxes and a triple selection of its Tempranillo grapes (in the vineyard, cluster by cluster, and berry by berry), fermentation took place with native yeasts for 10-14 days in stainless steel tanks (28ºC). Finally, it underwent aging for 24 months in predominantly French barrels of the highest quality, followed by an additional 36 months in the bottle, which provided it with a magnificent roundness.

Founded by Carlos Moro in 1988, Bodega Matarromera is one of the country's leading wineries, whose success is based on exceptional raw materials. Located on the slope of a hill in Valbuena del Duero, overlooking the Duero River, it received significant international awards from its early days. In fact, the first vintage of Matarromera won the Grand Gold Medal at the International Wine Competition. After this winery, the expansion and formation of Bodegas Familiares Matarromera began, one of the most important wine empires in the country, with a presence in various denominations.

Matarromera Gran Reserva 2018 (D.O. Ribera del Duero) is a highly versatile wine, perfect to pair with legumes, cured meats, pâtés, and even red meats.

Creators' opinion

Vivo ribete color guinda que en nariz muestra multitud de sensaciones frutales en perfecta armonía con toques a suave caramelo, cera de abeja... Complejo en sabores entre los que destacan las rojas zarzamoras frescas y fino chocolate negro.

The winery

Bodega Matarromera

Following the winemaking tradition of his Castilian ancestors, Carlos Moro founded the Matarromera winery in Valbuena de Duero (Valladolid) in 1988 with a clear objective: to create quality wines using the most advanced technology while respecting traditional winemaking methods. The main challenge undertaken by Carlos Moro was his commitment to new barrels for aging his wines, an initiative that was novel at the time in Ribera del Duero. Another key to Matarromera's success is its excellent vineyards, located in a legendary area of the D.O. Ribera del Duero: Valbuena de Duero.

Matarromera was the first winery of Carlos Moro and the seed of one of the most important wine groups in this country: Bodegas Familiares Matarromera. The first red wine produced by the winery—an ancestor of the brand we now know as Melior—achieved the title of "Best Wine in the World" at the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) competition held in Turkey in 1995. Currently, Bodega Matarromera has 150 hectares of its own vineyards and controls an additional 160 hectares.
