An Excellent vintage for a great Ribera del Duero. Matarromera Crianza has a legion of enthusiastic fans. The latest vintage has now come out: Matarromera Crianza 2019. A red wine whose success is based on Tempranillo vineyards very close to the river Duero, between Olivares and Valbuena de Duero (Valladolid), which produce high-quality grapes. And it’s been aged in selected fine-grained and lightly toasted French and American oak barrels to ensure maximum respect for the fruity flavours.

Matarromera’s first wine was made from the 1994 harvest and won the grand gold medal at the 9th International Wine Competition in Turkey, awarding it the title of best wine in the world. Since then it has remained up among the elite. It’s now brought out Matarromera Crianza 2019, a single-varietal Tempranillo grown on vines very close to the River Duero in Olivares and Valbuena de Duero (Valladolid), one of the most privileged areas for cultivating Tempranillo grapes in Spain. After being aged in oak for 12 months, the wine was further matured to perfection in the bottle. Excellent balance between fruit and oak.
The previous vintage of this Crianza, that of 2018, was included among the ‘top 100’ wines of 2021 by the prestigious magazine The Wine Spectator. And this new 2019 vintage, rated as Excellent in the D.O. Ribera del Duero, looks set to follow in its footsteps.
Founded by Carlos Moro in 1988, Bodega Matarromera is one of the foremost wineries in the country, whose success is based on its outstanding raw materials. Located on a hillside in Valbuena del Duero that commands a view of the river Duero, it began picking up major international awards from the outset. In fact, the very first vintage of Matarromera won the grand gold medal at the International Wine Competition. This marked the start of the expansion and shaping of Bodegas Familiares Matarromera, one of the most important winegrowing emporiums in the country that’s present in Toro, Cigales, Rueda and Rioja.
Matarromera Crianza 2018 (D.O. Ribera del Duero) is ideal with red meats, pasta dishes, pulses, cheese and pâtés.
Following the winemaking tradition of his Castilian ancestors, Carlos Moro founded the Matarromera winery in Valbuena de Duero (Valladolid) in 1988 with a clear objective: to create quality wines using the most advanced technology while respecting traditional winemaking methods. The main challenge undertaken by Carlos Moro was his commitment to new barrels for aging his wines, an initiative that was novel at the time in Ribera del Duero. Another key to Matarromera's success is its excellent vineyards, located in a legendary area of the D.O. Ribera del Duero: Valbuena de Duero.
Matarromera was the first winery of Carlos Moro and the seed of one of the most important wine groups in this country: Bodegas Familiares Matarromera. The first red wine produced by the winery—an ancestor of the brand we now know as Melior—achieved the title of "Best Wine in the World" at the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) competition held in Turkey in 1995. Currently, Bodega Matarromera has 150 hectares of its own vineyards and controls an additional 160 hectares.
