ARTICLE: Maruxa Godello 2024, 100% Godello, comes from one of the coldest harvests of the last decade in the D.O. Valdeorras, in which the grapes attained full alcoholic ripeness with good pH and acidity levels. The grapes that went into making it were grown on the terraced vineyards that the winery owns in the village of Éntoma; they specifically come from the Regueirón, O Follo, Valdemioto and Granilla plots, as well as from local suppliers in the same village.
Éntoma is located in the southernmost area of the D.O. Valdeorras, in the vicinity of the Galir and Sil rivers. Here, in the Galir Valley, the soil is slatey and south-facing, so that good ripening is achieved by the effect of sunlight. However, the soils near the Sil are more clayey, with boulders and north facing, as a result of which the grapes ripen later, producing wines with a floral and sharper touch.
The grapes were harvested by hand in 15-kg crates. They were then macerated in crates in a refrigerator and in tanks for 48 hours before undergoing alcoholic fermentation and were destemmed (not crushed) to bring out the primary aromas. Fermentation was carried out with indigenous yeasts. Finally, the wine was aged for 2 to 3 months on the lees in stainless steel tanks.
The Virgen del Galir winery dates back to 2002 and was founded by José Barros García. The most important wine experts soon acknowledged his work, such as Robert Parker, who included one of his Godellos in the top 100 best Spanish whites under €25 in 2009. Maruxa, or María in Spanish, was the name of the mother of the winery's founder.
The important Rioja group CVNE acquired this firm in 2017 with the aim of giving it a definitive boost towards the top of the Galician wine sector. The Virgen del Galir winery is located in Entoma, in O Barco de Valdeorras, in the east of the province of Ourense, and its vineyards grow on terraces at an altitude of more than 600 metres above sea level and with a 40% difference in altitude. It produces red wines from Mencía and white wines from Godello.
The white wine Maruxa Godello 2024 (D.O. Valdeorras) is ideal with baked fish.
Color amarillo intenso con ribete verdoso y brillante. En nariz es intenso y varietal con recuerdos de fruta blanca madura, monte bajo y muy mineral. Boca plena con buen equilibrio, sedoso, elegante, fresco, persistente y muy placentero.
The origin of the winery Virgen del Galir (2002) is entirely family-based: it was founded by José Barros García who, together with his son David, has championed for years the magic of Valdeorras wines, both those made from godello and the -rarer- reds from mencía. The excellent work of the Barros family (in 2009 Robert Parker included one of their godellos in the top 100 best Spanish white wines under €25 and awarded it 90 points) caught the attention of the CVNE Group, which acquired the winery in 2017 with the aim of giving it the definitive push towards the pinnacle of Galician wines.
The Virgen del Galir winery is located in Éntoma, in O Barco de Valdeorras, in the eastern part of the province of Ourense. There it has 40 hectares of vineyards planted on terraces at over 600 m altitude, some of them old and inherited from previous generations of the Barros family.
