Talking about the fashion of Garnachas from Sierra de Gredos might be trivializing. We prefer the concept of the “new Madrid wave.” The Garnacha reds conceived in this mountainous area have been capturing national and international attention for some years now. Here is where Marañones (2007) is located, a winery with a romantic vocation that proclaims its commitment to this land and its people. They present Marañones 2021, created with 50 to 70-year-old vines at over 800 m, located in the homonymous estate, divided into small plots with granite soils that bring minerality to a silky, long red wine with the liveliness typical of Garnacha. It has been aged for 12 months in barrels and foudres.

Marañones 2021 is born from one of the best vintages of this century in the Sierra de Gredos. It is nourished by old garnacha vines from the Marañones estate, divided into small plots with the three types of Gredos granite: white granite, brown granite, and pink granite. Here, bush-trained vines between 50 and 70 years old are found at an altitude of over 800 meters, which promotes a slow ripening of the grapes. Additionally, the grapes convey the minerality of the granite, which, combined with the vivacity of the garnacha and the age of the vines, results in a wine with a silky texture, length, and elegance.
The harvest was done manually in 12 kg boxes. The selected grapes arrived at the winery, and native yeasts were used for fermentation. Vinification took place in French oak and concrete vats ranging from 1,000 to 5,000 liters. The wine underwent 12 months of aging in used French oak barrels of 500 liters and 30-hectoliter foudres. It has not been subjected to stabilization, clarification, or filtration processes.
Bodega Marañones is a project created in 2007 in the Sierra de Gredos by lawyer and entrepreneur José Fernando Cornejo Pablos. It debuted on the market with the 2008 vintage. Its vineyards are located in San Martín de Valdeiglesias, one of the three subzones of the D.O. Vinos de Madrid, bordering Ávila and Toledo. Mountainous landscapes where the significant temperature difference between day and night provides ideal conditions for grape ripening.
The winery's philosophy is respect for the grape, applying very careful and methodical work. Its goal is to achieve elegant garnacha wines that express the characteristics of the soil and the vintage; with the freshness given by the altitude and mountain climate, and the minerality of the granitic soils. Each plot is vinified separately, and ecological and biodynamic methods are employed. In addition to red wines made from garnacha, Marañones produces white wines with the albillo real grape.
