Magallanes Reserva 2021 arises from very old vines of Tempranillo in the heart of Ribera del Duero, with a 24-month oak ageing that polishes its character with elegance and depth. A serious, complex red with personality, produced exclusively for Vinoselección by one of the region's most innovative firms.

Magallanes Reserva 2021 procede from 11 hectares of very old vines, aged between 80 and 100 years, located in the highest and eastern zones of the D.O. Ribera del Duero. The plots of Baños de Valdearados, with franco-arenoso soils, fine gravels and a clay-rich subsoil, contribute that note of freshness and character that is evident in every glass. Part of the grapes also come from Pesquera de Duero, another key name in the area.

It has a 24-month ageing in oak with a constant presence of lees, designed to keep its personality intact and without makeup. Here the fruit that is well chosen, the tradition well understood, and a winemaking approach that seeks balance, not excesses, take the lead.

Behind it is Selección César Muñoz, a family project that places the raw material at the centre and understands enology as a means of innovating without losing its roots. Fermentation in wooden tuns and manual work during maceration reflect that clear philosophy. In addition, Magallanes Reserva 2021 is an exclusive wine for Vinoselección, so you will only find it here.

Making process

Winemaking

After a rigorous selection of the grapes, the maceration develops over a medium duration, with the skins in contact with the must to promote an intense and balanced extraction, further reinforced by the alternating use of pumping-overs and manual punch-downs. Fermentation takes place in wooden tuns of 76 hectolitres, an environment that lends personality to the overall, and helps preserve the character of the Tempranillo. Subsequently, the malolactic fermentation is carried out in new oak barrels, about 80%, finishing a winemaking effort designed to shape a red wine with great identity and notable definition.

Vineyard

Description

Magallanes Reserva 2021 is born from 11 hectares of very old vineyards of Tempranillo, aged between 80 and 100 years, located in the higher and eastern areas of the Denominación de Origen Ribera del Duero, at elevations between 900 and 1000 metres above sea level. The plots, situated on plateaus and eastern slopes of the denomination, rest on franco-arenaceous soils, with a predominance of fine gravels and a deep clay horizon, a combination that favours drainage and adds complexity to the wine. Part of the grapes also comes from vineyards in Pesquera de Duero.

Climate

The plots are located in the highest and easternmost areas of the D.O. Ribera del Duero, at altitudes between 900 and 1000 metres, on plateaux and slopes of Baños de Valdearados, with part of the grapes coming from Pesquera de Duero. That elevated location shapes the character of the vineyard and favour slow and balanced ripening.

Viticulture

Viticulture adheres to a clearly traditional philosophy, with the highest priority given to the quality of the raw material and an absolute respect for the character of each plot.

The winery

The renowned winemaker and technical consultant César Muñoz passed away in 2022, but he left a significant legacy in the wine world—one that his life partner, Susana Esteban, continues to nurture vintage after vintage through their major joint project, Selección César Muñoz. This winemaking initiative aims to produce age-worthy wines sourced from some of the oldest and finest vineyards in the eastern Ribera del Duero region, an area characterized by above-average altitudes where the Tempranillo grape expresses itself with remarkable freshness and fruit-forward character.
