General Information

Conceived from a measured coupage of the native Portuguese grape varieties aragonês or tinta roriz, touriga nacional, castelão, and trincadeira, with a touch of the foreign syrah, Lancers Rosé is an easy-to-drink, aromatic, and fruity wine.

This sparkling rosé is the cornerstone of the Lancers line, a true top seller of José María da Fonseca, one of the oldest and most prestigious wineries in Portugal. Its creation stemmed from a proposal made by Henry Behar, an American wine importer, to José María da Fonseca. According to predictions by the company Vintage Wines of New York, the consumption of this type of wine would grow significantly after World War II in the United States, and this was a business opportunity they could not pass up. Thus, Lancers was born, named in homage to Velázquez's painting Las Lanzas, Behar's favorite. 75 years later, Lancers Rosé remains one of the emblems of the Portuguese winery and one of the best-selling wines outside its borders. Dare to discover and enjoy it with all kinds of salads, chicken, and Mexican and Italian dishes.

The winery

Founded in 1834, José María da Fonseca is one of the oldest wineries in Portugal. Currently managed by the sixth and seventh generations of the Soares Franco family, the company produces 30 different labels in the main wine regions of the Portuguese country, including Douro, Alentejo, and Península de Setúbal, which are marketed in over 70 countries.

The first wine born from its 650 hectares of vineyard, Periquita, dates back to 1850 and is considered one of the first red wines bottled in Portugal. The José María da Fonseca winery is also known for producing the Lancers line of sparkling wines and great Setúbal muscats, such as the historic 1947 vintage rated 100 Parker points.
