Bodegas Ateca makes the red Honoro Vera Garnacha 2022 in the D.O. Calatayud, a region that boasts a long tradition of cultivating Garnacha and brings out the best in this grape variety. Old vines with low yields planted in metamorphic rock and clayey gravel soils produced the grapes which, after careful processes ending with a stint in French barrels, resulted in a red with intense aromas and fresh, fruity flavours that’s easy to drink and has a distinctive spicy finish.

Honoro Vera Garnacha 2022 is a single-varietal Garnacha made by the Gil family in the D.O. Calatayud. The Garnacha grapes that went into making this young red came from vines planted in metamorphic rock and clayey gravel soils at an altitude of nearly 1,000 metres. Vinification, using stainless steel vats, ended with a short stint in French oak barrels to finish it off.
Belonging to the Gil Family Estates group, Bodegas Ateca was founded in 2005 in Ateca, a municipality of Zaragoza located 14 kilometres away from Calatayud. It owns 64 hectares of old vines, chiefly Garnacha, planted in slate soils on hilly slopes.
Honoro Vera Garnacha 2022 is a very fruity, flavoursome and floral wine. It goes well with salads with mild dressings, soups and stews, gelatinous meats, wild mushrooms, oily and white fish, soft, creamy cheeses, goats’ cheeses and meats like lamb and pork.
Honoro Vera Garnacha displays a ripe cherry colour with a garnet-red rim. Intense nose with dominant aromas of ripe fruit (raspberry, currant) over a minerally and spicy background. A wine that’s fruity, very fresh and easy to drink, and packed with flavours, ending with an exotic spicy finish with hints of white pepper.
Integrated into the Juan Gil Family Estates group, Bodegas Ateca stands as the initiative of the legendary winemaking family from Murcia in the D.O. Calatayud. For over a decade, its name has reflected the Zaragoza municipality where it is located.
The philosophy of the winery focuses on producing wines from the best Garnacha vineyards in the region, with the winemaking overseen by the renowned Australian enologist Michael Kyberd.
