General Information

Gran Buig 2016 is the top wine from Mas d’en Gil, one of the most prestigious wineries in Priorat. The namesake estate that houses it dates back to the second half of the 19th century and is located in the southern part of the D.O.Q., in the Bellmunt area, at 350 meters above sea level. To craft this exceptional red wine, the winery uses only the best vines of garnacha and cariñena from three plots, planted between 1931 and 1945, which are harvested exclusively in years of truly exceptional quality. This was the case in 2016, whose harvest reached an outstanding quality not seen at the estate since 2004.

Both the viticulture and winemaking practices employed by Mas d'en Gil in designing Gran Buig 2016 adhered strictly to biodynamic principles. The traditional production process included 18 months of aging in French oak barrels and an additional 24 months in the bottle to perfect it. The decision to release this wine to the market is made through a tasting with the entire winery and field team, highlighting its absolutely select and exclusive character, further reinforced by its extremely limited production.

The aromatic intensity and complexity, along with its smoothness and enveloping tannins on the palate, make Mas d’en Gil Gran Buig an ideal red wine from Priorat to enjoy alongside delicate meats such as a chicken cocotte, veal, duck confit, or pheasant. It is also an excellent pairing for fish like oven-baked turbot.

Creators' opinion

The winery

Although its journey, as we know it today, began in 1998 when the ownership of the estate that gives it its name passed into the hands of the Rovira Carbonell family, the history of the winery Mas d’en Gil dates back to the second half of the 19th century.

Francesc Gil was the first owner of this 125-hectare estate (45 of which are vineyards), located 350 meters above sea level in the municipality of Bellmunt del Priorat, in what is now considered the southern area of the D.O.Q. Priorat. Over the years, the estate became part of the heritage of several families, including that of the modernist artist Santiago Rusiñol.

In the late 1990s, the Rovira Carbonell family acquired it and restored its historic name of Mas d’en Gil. Under the direction of Pepe Rovira, one of the great names in Penedès wine, the winery's first productions were launched on the market in the year 2000. Currently, the family business is led by his youngest daughter, Marta Rovira Carbonell, who has implemented organic farming throughout the estate, among other measures.

The grapes with which Mas d’en Gil produces its wines, mainly Garnacha and Cariñena, grow in vineyards spread across slopes of licorella among five valleys, Mediterranean forest, and plantations of olive, almond, and hazelnut trees. This particular terroir imparts a distinct typicity not only to their fantastic whites and reds but also to the exquisite oil and vinegar they additionally produce.
