Made with grapes from a vineyard of schists and another of sands, worked from an ecological perspective, Gomariz X 2023 is an original wine that showcases the ripest profile of inland albariño.

Much more complex, rounded, mature, and with a softer acidity. This is how the Albariño from Ribeiro presents itself, far from the influence of the Atlantic, in the protagonist Gomariz X 2023. It is a different wine with very limited production, as the plants from which the fruits are harvested yield no more than one and a half kilos per harvest. This circumstance, along with the location of the As Penelas (with schist soils) and O Taboleiro (with granitic sands) estates, isolated from other plots, allows for the application of a more respectful and personalized organic agriculture.

After selecting the best grapes of treixadura (70%), albariño, and loureira, the technical team of Bodega Coto de Gomariz proceeded to pressing and selecting the free-run juice. This juice was fermented at a low temperature and refined in tanks for a few months and at least another month in the bottle. Gomariz X 2023 is ideal to enjoy with seafood, fresh pasta, soft creamy cheeses, and warm salads.

Coto de Gomariz is a family winery that produces high-expression wines under the D.O. Ribeiro. The founder of the winery, in the late 1970s, was Ricardo Carreiro, who, after emigrating to America, returned to his hometown and resumed the cultivation of old and abandoned vineyards in the area. However, it wasn't until the year 2000, under the direction of his son, Ricardo Carreiro Álvarez, that the winery began to experience significant growth, consolidating its leading position in the region.

Tasting notes

Pale yellow in color, clean and bright.

Vivid and intense on the nose, with prominent aromas of melon, nectarine, and lemon pulp over an interesting mineral background.

On the palate, it is fresh, fragrant, and structured, with a smooth flow where clear notes of white fruit and orange peel stand out. Long and persistent finish, with a pleasant bitter touch and the same mineral hints already perceived on the nose.

The winery

Coto de Gomariz is the winery of the Carreiro family. Its name refers to the valley and the village of Gomariz in Ourense, where, since the 10th century and as recorded in the general registry of the Kingdom of Simancas, the oldest wine estate in the Iberian Peninsula is located. The origin of the winery dates back to the 1970s when Ricardo Carreiro Ameijeiras, a native of Barro de Gomariz, returned from South America, where he had emigrated, and decided to resume winemaking. He purchased estates and annexed them to the family heritage, and in 1978 planted O Figueiral, the first mechanized vineyard in the area at that time. The first bottles of Coto de Gomariz came to light in the 1980s.

However, it was not until the year 2000, with the construction of the current winery and the management of his son Ricardo Carreiro Álvarez, that Coto de Gomariz became what it is today: one of the leading wineries of the D.O. Ribeiro.

Today, the winery owns 32 hectares of vineyards cultivated throughout the Alvia valley. Under the technical direction of the winemaker Xose Lois Sebio and following a mix of traditional, biodynamic, and ecological techniques, they produce high-expression wines from native grape varieties such as treixadura, godello, loureira, sousón, and mencía.
