Godelia Mencía 2019 is designed from old vines from different parts of the Bierzo region. It displays all the elegance, subtlety and freshness of the region's main variety, Mencía. It's the flagship wine of the Godelia winery, a red with abundant fruity notes that blend beautifully with notes from ageing (12 months in oak). Very pleasant to drink, fresh, fleshy and elegant, with a great finish. Quality and distinction.

General Information

Godelia Mencía 2019 is made wholly from Mencía grapes from vines between 40 and 80 years old that grow in a mixture of quartzite and slate soils at an altitude of 500–700 metres above sea level. It underwent malolactic fermentation in barrels and was subsequently aged for 12 months in fine-grained French oak barrels.

The D.O. Bierzo is currently enjoying a heyday. Critics and consumers alike are raving about its Mencía reds. And it's no wonder. This region has it all: history, a unique terroir dominated by smallholdings, vertical vineyards and slate soils, plus a great native variety, Mencía – a combination of factors that steep it in Romanticism. Godelia is one of the wineries that have given impetus to today's El Bierzo, committed to quality grape-growing and distinction.

Bodegas Godelia (2009) is based on an old high-quality vineyard. Owned by the García Rodríguez family, who descend from Galician farmers, the winery is located in one of the best areas of the D.O. Bierzo, the district of Pieros in the municipality of Cacabelos, along the Pilgrims' Way to Santiago de Compostela. It's built in the style of the typical manor houses of El Bierzo, perfectly integrated into the surroundings, and is equipped with the latest winemaking technology and a barrel cellar with vats of different capacities.

As for the vines, the winery is supplied by more than 40 hectares of vineyards spread over different plots, with different altitudes and orientations, whose slate soils lend its wines a characteristic minerality. It owns some Mencía vines that are over 80 years old and produce very low yields of high quality. It also cultivates the white Godello variety.

The red Godelia Mencía 2019 (D.O. Bierzo) is ideal with meat dishes such as beef Wellington.

Creators' opinion

A wine with a high concentration of fruit, rich nuances of red fruits, violets and mineral notes, which blend with the notes from ageing in oak. Fresh, fleshy and elegant palate with a great finish.

Bodegas Godelia (2009) has quickly established itself as one of the new benchmarks for wines from Bierzo. Owned by the García Rodríguez family, descendants of Galician farmers, the winery is located in one of the best areas of the D.O. Bierzo, in the village of Pieros in the municipality of Cacabelos, along the Camino de Santiago. It is built in the style of the typical large houses of Bierzo, perfectly integrated into the surroundings, and equipped with the latest winemaking technology and a barrel park with vats of different capacities.

Godelia is supported by high-quality old vineyards: it draws from more than 40 hectares of vines spread across various plots, with different altitudes and orientations, on slate soils that impart a distinctive minerality to its wines. It has some mencía vines that are over eighty years old and produce low yields. It also cultivates the white godello grape. Godelia is also one of the main wine tourism destinations in Bierzo.
