It was the first Chilean wine born on slate terraces, the result of 20 years of hard work carried out by the Miguel Torres Chile winery in the subregion of the Maule Valley. Escaleras de Empedrado 2014 is the third vintage of this unique limited-production pinot noir, which has become, due to its exceptional quality, the top wine of the Spanish-origin brand.

General Information

The 95 points awarded by the prestigious international critic Tim Atkin are an undeniable indicator of the spectacular quality of Escaleras de Empedrado 2014.

The search undertaken by the winery Miguel Torres Chile for slate soils, similar to the mythical licorella from Priorat, culminated in 2003 with the acquisition of the Fundo Empedrado. With the purchase of this 364-hectare estate of steep terrain, arranged in terraces, the winery found the ideal cradle for its great dream red wine. After years of research, it was decided to plant pinot noir vines, something unprecedented on this type of surface in Chilean lands. The result of this endeavor, Escaleras de Empedrado, came to light in 2012. The third vintage, this 2014 that the Club brings to you, confirms a superb wine, with 7 months of aging in French oak barrels, all the character imparted by its terroir of origin, good acidity, and great freshness. Get one of its few bottles and enjoy it especially with dishes like wild mushrooms, stewed rabbit, or duck confit.

Tasting notes

At sight, it displays a delicate cherry red color, with a low layer.

Intense and elegant nose. Predominance of aromas of sour cherry, rosehip, undergrowth, mushrooms, and moss.

On the palate, it is balanced, fresh, and mineral. Its salty notes, slate stone, and graphite are surprising. Long and refreshing finish. Distinctive and full of personality.

The winery

Miguel Torres Chile was the first foreign winemaking company to establish itself in this country of the Southern Cone. The Torres family, a centenary saga with a presence in the Spanish denominations Penedès, Priorat, Catalunya, Costers del Segre, Conca de Barberà, Ribera del Duero, Rueda, Rías Baixas, and Rioja, made the leap to the New World in 1979 to start a new project in the Curicó Valley, attracted by the great winemaking potential of Chile.

Currently, the company owns more than a thousand hectares of vineyards, distributed across plots with diverse climatic and soil characteristics, enabling the cultivation of different varieties and producing highly expressive wines with intense varietal character. Miguel Torres Chile has fully consolidated its position in the country, and its wines are now present in over a hundred other countries. Since 2010, Miguel Torres Maczassek, a member of the fifth generation of the family, has held the presidency of the company. Among his objectives are increasing exports and maintaining the company’s successful trajectory, marked by innovation and a commitment to organic farming and fair trade.
