General Information

Santa Rosa is Bodegas Enrique Mendoza’s top wine. It’s also the wine that marked the D.O. Alicante’s qualitative leap and is the standard bearer of the winemaking elite in the area. Santa Rosa 2022 was created from selected grapes from the winery’s own estate, Finca El Chaconero, a blend of Monastrell, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz.

Finca El Chaconero spans 80 hectares of vineyards on an outstanding plot located in Villena, where the foreign Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Petit Verdot and Shiraz grape varieties share importance with the native Monastrell. These varieties have adapted perfectly to the terroir chosen by the Mendoza family and are successfully cultivated without herbicides and insecticides.

To get the best out of each variety and all the potential of the fresh berries, the grapes were harvested by hand in crates. The whole grapes from each plot were vinified separately in small vats at a temperature of 25ºC, and then blended to create this wine. It was matured to perfection in new French Allier oak barrels.

When this New World-style red wine appeared, it encouraged the winemakers of Alicante to go for French varieties. Elegance, finesse, freshness, structure and balance are just some of the attributes of this wine, an ambassador and driving force of the Denominación. Its name is a tribute to Rosa Cortés Devesa, the mother of the winery’s founder, Enrique Mendoza.

The Spanish Mediterranean winegrowing scene of the late 1980s was notable for the production of huge quantities of grapes chiefly to make wine in bulk and reds that were used to lend colour and strength to those of other European regions. Fortunately, the family-run winery Enrique Mendoza set about putting an end to these practices. Founded in Alfaz del Pi in 1989, it’s considered a pioneer in producing quality wines in the D.O. Alicante, Within a short time it broadened its scope of action to a second winery in Villena.

The red Santa Rosa 2022 (D.O. Alicante) is ideal with beef cheeks cooked in red wine and also with rice dishes with meat and mushrooms.

The winery

Bodegas Enrique Mendoza
Bodegas Enrique Mendoza is a family-owned winery founded in 1989 and based in the town of Alfaz del Pi, in Alicante. The seed of the winery was "planted" in the late 1970s by Enrique Mendoza, a viticulturist passionate about enology, who decided to continue the tradition of the Marina Baixa region of producing wine for family consumption.

Today, the project has become well-established, and Bodegas Enrique Mendoza boasts 84.5 hectares of vineyards. The winery prides itself on being a pioneer in the region for introducing renowned international varieties such as the white chardonnay and the red cabernet sauvignon, merlot, pinot, petit verdot, and syrah, while also championing local varieties like monastrell, the queen grape of the D.O. Vinos Alicante, and moscatel.

The winery's philosophy is rooted in respect for the vineyard and the environment, practicing a herbicide- and insecticide-free viticulture with precise care, resulting in wines full of nuances.
