Originally from Bordeaux, the petit verdot is a prestigious grape that remains a rarity in the Spanish vineyard. However, it has shown good adaptation in Mediterranean regions such as the D.O. Alicante. As an example, Enrique Mendoza Petit Verdot 2022, a parcel red wine crafted artisanally, with some of the clusters left unstemmed. It is dominated by red fruit notes and presents a structured, balanced palate with polished and sweet tannins.

General Information

Enrique Mendoza Petit Verdot 2022 is made exclusively with petit verdot, one of the essential grapes in the great Bordeaux blends, very rare in the Spanish vineyard. The grapes come from the vineyards on the slope of "Cabezo de la Virgen," in Villena, sustainable vineyards with the environment. To extract all the potential of fresh fruit, the harvest was done by hand and in boxes. The whole grain went into small tanks, destemming only part of the bunches.

Founded in 1989 in Alfaz del Pi, Enrique Mendoza is a family winery pioneering in the production of quality wines in the D.O. Alicante. It is distinguished for having bet from the beginning on international grapes, such as merlot and petit verdot, in the New World style.

In the Spanish Mediterranean vineyard of the late eighties, excessive grape productions prevailed, mainly to produce bulk wine and reds that would serve to give color and degree to those of other regions of Europe. Fortunately, Enrique Mendoza took charge of breaking with these practices. In a short time, he expanded his scope to a second winery in Villena, where he gathered 80 hectares of vineyard in the Finca El Chaconero plot.

The red Enrique Mendoza Petit Verdot 2022 (D.O. Alicante) is perfect for accompanying stewed partridge or sautéed mushrooms with ham. Due to its artisanal production, it may have natural sediments with age.

Tasting notes

Enrique Mendoza Petit Verdot boasts a beautiful cherry red color with violet highlights.

On the nose, it features predominant aromas of forest fruits (blackberries, blueberries, and strawberries) intertwined with intense hints of black stones, graphite, humus, wet earth, undergrowth, toasted notes, and smoke.

Powerful, serious, and meaty on the palate.

Creators' opinion

Wine with Bordeaux red color, violet highlights, and medium layer. The aromas remind us of red fruits such as plums and cherries intertwined with strong memories of low mountain minerals, wet earth, phosphorus, toasted notes, and smoke. On the palate, it is serious, meaty, with polished and sweet tannins, good presence, and reminders of red fruits.

The winery

Bodegas Enrique Mendoza
Bodegas Enrique Mendoza is a family-owned winery founded in 1989 and based in the town of Alfaz del Pi, in Alicante. The seed of the winery was "planted" in the late 1970s by Enrique Mendoza, a viticulturist passionate about enology, who decided to continue the tradition of the Marina Baixa region of producing wine for family consumption.

Today, the project has become well-established, and Bodegas Enrique Mendoza boasts 84.5 hectares of vineyards. The winery prides itself on being a pioneer in the region for introducing renowned international varieties such as the white chardonnay and the red cabernet sauvignon, merlot, pinot, petit verdot, and syrah, while also championing local varieties like monastrell, the queen grape of the D.O. Vinos Alicante, and moscatel.

The winery's philosophy is rooted in respect for the vineyard and the environment, practicing a herbicide- and insecticide-free viticulture with precise care, resulting in wines full of nuances.
