General Information

Don PX Cosecha 2003 is born from a selection that, every year, Bodegas Toro Albalá carries out of its sweet Pedro Ximénez wines that have undergone the longest aging to be bottled. Aged for at least 20 years in American oak barrels, after an exhaustive harvest and pasificación (sun-drying) of the grapes, this almost immortal wine is dense and persistent on the palate.

Bodegas Toro Albalá was founded in 1922, in Aguilar de la Frontera (Córdoba), by José María Toro Albalá, a small farmer who had the idea of preserving old wines for their transformation into authentic oenological treasures. A philosophy rooted in tradition and craftsmanship that is now continued by his nephew Antonio Sánchez, the current owner and winemaker, and which has produced some of the best wines in the recent history of our country, such as Don PX Convento Selección 1946, rated with 100 Parker points.

Don PX Cosecha 2003 is an excellent Pedro Ximénez from the D.O. Montilla-Moriles, complex and intense, which will be ideal for pairing with chocolates with a high cocoa percentage and even certain blue cheeses that are not excessively intense.

Tasting notes

On the nose, Don PX Cosecha 2003 is balsamic, with pronounced notes of carob pod, pickled vegetables, dried plums, and black licorice. It then develops a herbal freshness (cypress) and hints of dried banana and spices like Madagascar pepper.

On the palate, it offers a roasted persistence, with touches of caramel and honey. Long and elegant, the retronasal brings back the sensations of dried plums and roasted fruits. It is a sweet wine without being heavy, thanks to its perfect balance of acidity, with good persistence on the finish.

Creators' opinion

The winery

From the dream of a small farmer, Bodegas Toro Albalá was born in 1922, in the heart of the Cordoba countryside. José María Toro Albalá began the journey of his winery with a clear goal: the production of fortified wines and high-quality liqueurs with the Pedro Ximénez grape as the protagonist.

The fino Eléctrico, popularly known as such when the winery was established on the grounds of an old power station, was one of its main creations in the 1920s. Four decades later, in the 1960s, the winery would begin a new chapter under the leadership of Antonio Sánchez, oenologist and nephew of the founder, which continues to this day. With a more international vision but without abandoning the family tradition, Bodegas Toro Albalá showcases its mastery with authentic oenological treasures such as its amontillados or its unparalleled Don PX. Notably, its Don PX Convento Selección 1946 marked a turning point for this Cordoba winery by becoming the first sweet wine to achieve the mythical 100 Parker points.

The vineyards owned by the winery, part of the D.O.P. Montilla-Moriles, are spread across the albariza soils of Finca La Noria, in the municipality of Aguilar de la Frontera, and the best area of Los Moriles Altos, as well as the sandy soils of Montalbán, where the raisining process takes place.
