Cune Ecológico 2023 is a red wine born from native varieties (Garnacha, Tempranillo and Graciano) cultivated in a sustainable way in Haro and San Vicente de la Sonsierra. It has a short but intense ageing of 6 months in oak barrels that provides balance, structure and a very contemporary profile. Don’t miss it!
Cune Ecológico 2023 is born from the calm of someone who works the vineyard well and with a clear intention to respect each plot. It is made with Garnacha, Tempranillo and Graciano, hand-harvested at the right moment and fermented separately to preserve all the identity of the vintage. Afterwards, it rests 6 months in 300 litre barrels, giving it a short and finely tuned ageing.
It comes from vineyards in Haro and San Vicente controlled by CVNE and cultivated organically on calcareous-clay soils with organic and plant-based fertilisers. Here the use of herbicides and synthetic pesticides is avoided, always aiming for a natural balance that is noticeable in the vineyard from the first glance. The CPAER certification backs this patient and sustainable work, designed so that the grapes reach the winery with all their freshness.
Cune Ecológico 2023 is, moreover, a vintage presented exclusively for Vinoselección, a lovely way to approach an organic Rioja with personality, produced with care and with a very contemporary philosophy, yet without losing the traditional pulse. And with the unmistakable CVNE seal!
Consumption features
Pairing
Cune Ecológico 2023 pairs very well with dishes such as chicken in pepitoria or aubergine lasagne with beef.
The harvest was carried out manually from 5 to 9 October 2023, picking separately the varieties Garnacha, Tempranillo and Graciano at their optimum ripeness, with careful selection aimed at preserving the primary aromas, the acidity and the freshness of the wine. On arrival at the winery, the grapes were kept at 12°C for 12 hours to prevent oxidation and preserve the character of this ecological Rioja vintage.
Winemaking
After minimal crushing, the grapes of Garnacha, Tempranillo and Traciano are macerated separately in small concrete vats. Before fermenting, they are held for 12 hours at 12 °C to prevent oxidation and maintain freshness. The alcoholic fermentation starts naturally, with indigenous yeasts, and develops at 24 °C, with very limited use of sulphur dioxide. Afterwards, the wine completes malolactic fermentation in the winery, always respecting the clean and frank fruit profile.
Aging
6 months in 300-litre oak barrels.
Bottling
It has a production of 40,000 bottles of 75 cl.
Vineyard
Climate
Spring arrived with scarce rainfall and summer tightened with heatwaves above 40°C, accompanied by storms and very warm nights. The heavy rains in the first half of September forced the harvest to be honed to perfection, which began just in time to preserve freshness and the primary aromas.
Viticulture
In the vineyards in Haro and San Vicente that give rise to Cune Ecológico 2023, the winery works with certified organic viticulture, relying on calcareous-clay soils, organic and plant-origin fertilisers, and manual harvesting carried out at the optimal ripening moment so that each plot precisely expresses the freshness and varietal character of Garnacha, Tempranillo and Graciano; in addition, the grapes are vinified separately and any practice that disrupts the natural balance of the vineyard is avoided. It is viticulture that respects the surroundings, guided by sustainable criteria and by very careful fieldwork.
Tasting notes
View
Dark cherry colour with high intensity, clean and bright.
Nose
It shows an aromatic profile dominated by violets and berries, with notes of blackberries, currants and strawberries. The liquorice provides depth and definition, while manual harvest and the elaboration of each variety separately preserve freshness and primary aromas. The combination of Garnacha, Tempranillo and Graciano translates into a lively, direct aromatic phase with a pronounced fruity character.
Mouth
On the palate it is smooth and silky. It presents a mouthfeel marked by a young tannin, with a pleasant texture that accompanies the sip without overpowering, and a fresh, youthful finish that prolongs its fruity sensation. The retro-nasal is long and fruity, providing continuity and rounding off a tasting phase that is lively, balanced and very expressive.
The Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España is one of the great symbols of the Estación de Haro neighborhood, the great capital of Rioja wine. Founded in 1879 by the brothers Raimundo and Eusebio Real de Asúa, CVNE (as it is known worldwide) can proudly claim to have remained at the top throughout its history. Ten years after its creation, the winery inaugurated an impressive barrel hall designed by the studio of Alexandre Gustave Eiffel. By 1900, it was already producing nearly 80,000 bottles, an unthinkable feat for the time. The 20th century established CVNE as an institution of Spanish wine.
Over 140 years, it has successfully combined tradition and innovation to create wines that today are the standard-bearers of Rioja reds and have garnered international critical acclaim. Its Imperial Gran Reserva 2004 made history when it was chosen as Wine of the Year 2013 by the prestigious American magazine Wine Spectator, marking the first time a Spanish wine received this recognition.
Since its foundation, CVNE has expanded its heritage and grown with avant-garde projects at different times in its history, such as the creation of Viñedos del Contino or Viña Real.
