The viura, malvasía, and garnacha blanca grapes that nourish the wine Classica Blanco Gran Reserva 2014 come from bush-trained vineyards with an average age of 65 years, planted on limestone soils in the Sonsierra and clay-iron terraces of Alto Najerilla. These plots, located at high altitudes and facing north on the slopes of the Sierra de la Demanda, provide freshness, tension, and a unique mineral expression. Traditional viticulture and respect for the environment ensure fruits of exceptional quality.
After the harvest, the viura, malvasía, and garnacha blanca varieties fermented in a single tank with native yeasts, at moderate temperatures (17-18 ºC). The wine was aged for three years in Bordeaux barrels made of European oak (Quercus petraea), sourced from selected forests in France and Eastern Europe, with one-third new barrels, one-third once-used, and one-third twice-used barrels. This long and meticulous aging process brings structure, complexity, and longevity.
Hacienda López de Haro (Vintae group) has revived the spirit of the great aged Rioja wines with its Classica range. From their winery in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, they produce wines that combine tradition, authenticity, and a contemporary perspective. Classica Blanco Gran Reserva 2014 is a clear example of their philosophy. Enjoy this Rioja white wine with fatty fish, baked seafood, poultry, aged cheeses, or Asian cuisine dishes.
Visual: Yellow with golden hues, very bright and with grayish nuances on the rim. Nose: A blend of numerous nuances, with great complexity, the result of its prolonged evolution both in barrel and in bottle. Aromas of chamomile and dried flowers stand out, with a smoky and leafy background. Fresh citrus notes and ripe fruits with hints of date and fig also appear. Its saline character stands out at the end, adding great appeal and enveloping all its complexity. Palate: It has a broad entry, with very glyceric and sweet sensations. However, its good acidity counteracts the initial sensations and creates a passage through the palate with great intensity. In the end, the texture imparted by the barrel becomes more noticeable, as well as its roasted character, which adds the final touch of complexity. This is a wine with a long journey, full of character and authenticity.
Located on a hill in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, in the heart of Rioja Alta, Bodega Hacienda López de Haro (formerly Bodega Classica) rises above a true sea of vineyards nourished by the Ebro River. The Riojan Sonsierra is an area situated on the southern side of the Sierra de Cantabria and Toloño, which protect it from the cold and humid winds of the Cantabrian Sea. Its weather conditions, with more rainfall in winter than during the rest of the year and winds channeled through the Ebro Valley, make it an optimal area for vine cultivation. Its rugged terrain, with clay-limestone soils that are highly drained, is perfect for the tempranillo variety.
At Bodega Hacienda López de Haro (D.O.Ca. Rioja), the goal is to respect traditional winemaking methods, so the fermentation tanks (ranging from 15,000 to 35,000 liters) have very wide openings to mimic the traditional winemaking in open vats. This allows for easier punch-downs to better work the cap. The winery has a stock of nearly 5,000 barrels, three-quarters of which are French oak and one-quarter American oak. French oak aligns with the style of wines produced at Bodega Hacienda López de Haro, as it better preserves the fruit and the distinctive character of the varieties most used in the López de Haro collection: tempranillo, garnacha, and graciano. The winery manages 95 hectares of its own vineyards and controls an additional 450 hectares.
The latest recognition for the wines from this winery comes from Master of Wine Elizabeth Gabay, the world's leading British expert on rosé wines, who selected Classica Gran Reserva 2012 as the Best Rosé in the World in her report The Rosé Report 2023.
