Celsus 2020 is the ‘top’ wine from Bodegas Vetus, characterized by its usual complexity and power. Made with Tinta de Toro grapes from an estate with centenary, pre-phylloxera vines that produce very low yields, and aged for 14 months in French oak. Powerful and smooth at the same time: a tamed ‘toro’.

Celsus 2020 is a wine of limited production, as it comes from only 1.3 hectares of vineyard. These are pre-phylloxera vines -planted in 1920- that grow on the La Lola estate, at 700 m altitude on sandy-loam soils, yielding just 1800 kg per hectare. The grapes, 100% Tinta de Toro, were hand-harvested in late September. After destemming, they fermented in 3000-liter tanks. The wine then underwent malolactic fermentation in new French oak barrels, and finally aged for 14 months.
With Bodegas Vetus (2003), the Artevino group aimed to establish itself in a region with great potential and valuable old vineyards, such as the D.O. Toro. They began searching for the most suitable location and eventually found it on an estate near Villabuena del Puente, an area with an extreme climate in the southern part of the Duero River. This marked the beginning of a small winery dedicated to meticulous winemaking, producing estate wines crafted from the vineyards surrounding the winery.
Bodegas Vetus (2003) is the project of the Antón family (Grupo Artevino) in the D.O. Toro. For its development, they acquired an estate in the heart of the denomination. This estate currently houses modern winery facilities inaugurated in 2008 and 20 hectares of vineyards divided into 3 plots with vines of different ages and planting patterns.
Vetus applies precision and environmentally respectful viticulture, with meticulous care of the vines. The tinta de Toro grape is the star of the vineyard, cultivated in trellis and limited to low yields of around 4,000 kg per hectare in favor of quality. The vines are located on slopes with sandy-loam soils and benefit from a climate with significant temperature fluctuations between night and day during the ripening period, which helps produce wines with greater intensity of color and aromas.
The wines of Vetus aim for greater friendliness and balance than traditional reds from Toro. Additionally, the winery produces a white wine under the umbrella of the D.O. Rueda.
