Bodegas Familiares Matarromera needs no introduction. It’s one of Spain’s leading groups with wineries in various regions that always achieve high standards. Casar de Vide is their winery in the D.O. Ribeiro, an area traditionally known for its white wines. This firm’s white wine Casar de Vide Sobre Lías 2022 is the result of blending Treixadura, the main grape variety in the region, with other native varieties: Albariño, Godello and Torrontés. Ageing on the lees has added complexity to the nose, enhancing the fruity notes with hints of bakery and, and gives it a very smooth palate. All in all, it’s a superb example from one of the most important Denominaciones of white wines in the country, with an Atlantic character and extra complexity.

General Information

Casar de Vide Sobre Lías 2022 is a blend of the native Treixadura, Albariño, Godello and Torrontés varieties. Ageing on the lees has enhanced it with complex aromas, notably hints of bakery. It’s also made it extra smooth on the palate.

The chosen vineyards that produced the grapes that went into making this wine lie on either side of the river Miño, with different orientations to bring out different nuances in the Treixadura: greater freshness in the shadier areas, and greater ripeness in those more exposed to sunlight. The vines are located in Castrelo de Miño and Cenlle (Ourense), a total of 5 hectares at an altitude of 200 metres, and grow in loam-siliceous soils ideally suited to the perfect ripening of these grape varieties.

Ribeiro has lately regained all the past splendour that led it to be hailed for centuries as Galicia’s most famous production area and an emblem of national whites. The recovery of traditional native varietals with Treixadura as a spearhead, combined with other local grapes such as Torrontés, has placed Ribeiros among the whites in greatest demand in Spain and has attracted the attention of the most important wine groups.

Casar de Vide is based in Castrelo de Miño (Ourense), an area with a long winegrowing tradition, and is part of Bodegas Familiares Matarromera. The facilities were built in 1988 using quarried granite beside the historic firm founded in 1957. This firm has perfectly combined concepts such as modernity, technology, state of the art and classicism.

Casar de Vide Sobre Lías 2022 (D.O. Ribeiro) is perfect with baked sea bass with onions and courgettes.

Creators' opinion

The winery

Casar de Vide is located in Castrelo de Miño, within the Ribeiro designation of origin. Since 2019, Casar de Vide has aimed to become one of the wine references of the Galician region, where excellence and quality are essential hallmarks of identity, both in the production methods and in its highly valued wines with geographical indication since 1932.The winery covers an area of 2,200 square meters and was built in 1988 from granite quarry stone next to the historic house, which was founded in 1957. Casar de Vide has successfully combined modernity, technology, and avant-garde with the classicism of a land that holds unique potential, something that has not gone unnoticed by Carlos Moro, the president of Bodegas Familiares Matarromera.
