La Capilla Merlot 2021 is a red wine made entirely from Merlot grapes from a small plot called La Cofradía, planted with vines more than 40 years old that grow in clay soils with ferrous layers. General Information

The characteristic climate of the area (Roa, Anguix and La Horra) coupled with exceptional events such as storm Filomena provided unbeatable ripening conditions for the excellent Merlet grapes that went into making La Capilla Merlot 2021 and led to the 2021 vintage being rated as Excellent. This red, designated a Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León, is notable for its aromas of red fruits together with honeyed and toasty notes, fullness on the palate and distinguished elegance.

Finca La Capilla is a small winery located in the province of Burgos, in the heart of the Denominación de Origen Ribera del Duero. It dates back to 1998 and is currently surrounded by 60 hectares of its own vineyards distributed between Roa, Anguix and La Horra. The Castilian firm owes the quality of its exports to the good work of the Forner family, who boast a long experience with their Gran Cru Classé in Bordeaux and the famous Marqués de Cáceres.

The grapes that went into making this expressive red, with a limited production of 11,987 bottles, were harvested by hand on the same day. The bunches of Merlot were selected on a sorting table before undergoing alcoholic fermentation in small vats with native yeasts. Malolactic fermentation was then carried out in fine-grained French oak barrels and after completing the process the wine continued its ageing in the same barrels for 14 months. It was finally matured to perfection in the bottle for several months before being release. The result is this La Capilla Merlot 2021, a harmonious, different and elegant wine that’s perfect with grilled, stewed or roast meats, free-range poultry, pork, roast or char-grilled lamb and mature cheeses.

Creators' opinion

The winery

Bodegas Finca La Capilla
Having recently celebrated half a century of history, Marqués de Cáceres presents itself as a winery that markets its creations in over 150 countries and stands as one of the best ambassadors of Spanish wines. The wine group led by Cristina Forner has recently launched a new initiative in Roa de Duero, Bodegas Finca La Capilla, where, with the Tempranillo variety as its flagship, they captivate us with the endless resources of the region's emblematic grape outside its native Rioja.
