General Information

Bordón Reserva 2016 is a traditional Rioja. Small percentages of Graciano and Mazuelo accompany the prevailing grape, Tempranillo, which accounts for 80% of the blend of this red wine. It’s made from grapes selected from vineyards of the three subregions in Rioja: Alta, Alavesa and Oriental. 18 months of ageing in French oak and American oak barrels have been combined with three rackings which have naturally clarified the wine. The necessary resting time in bottles has done the rest.

Bodegas Franco-Españolas was founded in 1890, a key moment in the history of winemaking in Spain: the arrival of French winemakers in la Rioja as a consequence of the spread of the phylloxera plague in French vineyards. Frederick Anglade Saurat, from Bordeaux, founded the winery and began to apply the new techniques which were already being used in the neighbouring country, and which led to a revolution in Rioja wines. The winery became fully Spanish owned in 1920, and since 1984 the Eguizábal family has managed it.

The wines of Bodegas Franco-Españolas have been present for decades on the tables of the main cities of the world, representing the classical style of Rioja. An anecdote:, in 1956 it was visited by writer Ernest Hemingway.

Since 2017, this wine previously called Rioja Bordón has been called Bordón, and adopted the slogan of being “boldly classic”. In the glass it displays an attractive shade of ruby-red with aromas of red fruit, and also cedar, chocolate and toffee. These notes are reproduced when tasting, maintaining a good balance.

What to pair with Bordón Reserva 2016? This red wine from the D.O.Ca. Rioja is perfect with stews: an Asturian bean fabada or lentil stew, for example.

The winery

Bodegas Franco-Españolas
Bodegas Franco-Españolas is a true benchmark among the historic wineries of our country. Founded in 1890 by the Frenchman Frederick Anglade, from the Anglade firm, together with other Spanish partners (hence the name “Franco-Españolas”), it is now entirely Spanish-owned and has been in the hands of the Eguizábal family since 1983.

Located in the heart of Logroño, Bodegas Franco-Españolas caters to the current tastes of consumers while respecting the winery's historical legacy, because, as they themselves state, “there are few things better than a good classic.” Its facilities, featuring elegant architecture, span 59,000 square meters, and its underground cellars house 15,000 barrels where their Crianza, Reserva, and Gran Reserva wines are aged.
