Our friendship with Viñas Familia Gil is long-standing and fruitful in producing great wines, and not only in Jumilla. We have finally managed to collaborate with them in Calatayud, in their Bodegas Ateca project, with a spectacular garnacha that goes by the name of Atteca Cuvée Especial 2022. This is a wine you will only find at Vinoselección and one you cannot miss, especially if you are a fan of this native grape variety that is so trendy worldwide.

General Information
In recent times, garnacha has begun to claim prominence over the traditional and dominant tempranillo, positioning itself as one of Spain's great red grape varieties. A clear example of its potential is Atteca Cuvée Especial 2022, a wine that reflects the excellence that can be achieved when this grape is cultivated under exceptional conditions: low-yield vineyards located at the highest altitudes of slate-soil slopes, in the surroundings of the Zaragoza municipality of Ateca.
The vines, planted between 700 and 1,000 meters above sea level, are harvested manually, respecting the natural rhythm of the vine. The vinification is carried out in stainless steel tanks, maintaining a controlled temperature that does not exceed 25 °C. Subsequently, the wine is transferred to French oak barrels where it undergoes malolactic fermentation. This process, conducted in close collaboration between the winery's winemakers and the technical team of Vinoselección, results in a wine of remarkable complexity after 6 months of aging in wood.
Bodegas Ateca is supported by Viñas Familia Gil, one of the most influential winegrowing groups in the country. Its epicenter is located at Bodegas Juan Gil, in Jumilla, the birthplace of this renowned family saga. Over the years, the group has expanded its presence across various wine regions of Spain, establishing small wineries that extract the best of each terroir, always using native varieties. Thanks to its experience and commitment to quality, Viñas Familia Gil has managed to position itself among the international elite, achieving levels of excellence with several of its wines.
Atteca Cuvée Especial 2022 pairs perfectly with roast lamb, a vegetable barbecue, or game dishes such as stewed partridge.
Tasting notes
Cherry red color with good depth.
It presents a fine and intense nose, where aromas of red fruit and jam stand out, giving way to pleasant floral notes and a spicy background.
On the palate, it is flavorful, pleasant, balanced, with fine tannins perfectly integrated. Its finish is long and persistent.
The winery
Integrated into the Juan Gil Family Estates group, Bodegas Ateca stands as the initiative of the legendary winemaking family from Murcia in the D.O. Calatayud. For over a decade, its name has reflected the Zaragoza municipality where it is located.
The philosophy of the winery focuses on producing wines from the best Garnacha vineyards in the region, with the winemaking overseen by the renowned Australian enologist Michael Kyberd.
