Atteca Armas 2022 is the 'top' wine from Bodegas Ateca, a winery located in Calatayud where the Gil family works with old Garnacha vineyards planted on slate soils. Concentration and intensity of aromas, rich fruit character, and a carefully measured barrel aging process have resulted in a limited-production wine that stands out as one of the most sublime of the D.O.
Convinced that the best approach was to maintain the same philosophy of respecting minimal yields in the vines, allowing nature to speak in each vintage and avoiding unnecessary interventionism, the Gil family left Jumilla to embark on new projects far from their homeland. Can Blau, Atalaya, Shaya, Lagar da Condesa, Tridente, and Ateca are some of the wineries they manage, which also leave no one indifferent to international critics.
From Bodegas Ateca, in the D.O. Calatayud, comes Atteca Armas 2022, a limited-production red wine born from old vineyards with very low yields, planted with Garnacha vines on slate soils on the slopes of the Aragonese town of Ateca. A wine that completed its malolactic fermentation in some of the finest French oak barrels on the market, where it subsequently remained for 18 months, now presenting itself full of nuances, powerful, meaty, and with an interesting fruity character.
Atteca Armas 2022 pairs well with grilled red meats, meat-based rice dishes, big and small game stews, cured cheeses, and charcuterie.
Atteca Armas displays a dark cherry color. An attractive nose with aromas of ripe fruit, roasted and spicy notes from long aging in wood (pepper and nutmeg), and mineral hints from the slate soils where the vineyard grows. On the palate, it is flavorful and powerful, fruity and elegant, fleshy and complex. It drinks magnificently now but shows great aging potential.
Integrated into the Juan Gil Family Estates group, Bodegas Ateca stands as the initiative of the legendary winemaking family from Murcia in the D.O. Calatayud. For over a decade, its name has reflected the Zaragoza municipality where it is located.
The philosophy of the winery focuses on producing wines from the best Garnacha vineyards in the region, with the winemaking overseen by the renowned Australian enologist Michael Kyberd.
