The Sierra de Gredos has established itself as one of the most dynamic wine regions in Spain, attracting the attention of experts and enthusiasts. Twenty-five years ago, the project Bodegas Arrayán was born there, driven by José María Entrecanales and María Marsans, now an undisputed reference in the area thanks to the talent of winemaker Maite Sánchez. Their wine Arrayán Selección 2020, with D.O. Méntrida, captures the essence of the La Verdosa estate (Toledo) through a blend of syrah, merlot, cabernet sauvignon, and petit verdot, aged for 11 months in French oak barrels to achieve an elegant and characterful profile.

General Information

Arrayán Selección 2020 is an organic wine that combines four international varieties in a balanced blend: 30% syrah, 30% merlot, 30% cabernet sauvignon, and 10% petit verdot. The grapes come from Finca La Verdosa, in Toledo, where the vines are rooted in sandy soils at an altitude of 510 meters.

Each variety underwent a cold pre-fermentation maceration for 24 hours before fermentation, which was carried out in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures for about 15 days. After completing malolactic fermentation, Arrayán Selección 2020 rested for 11 months in French oak barrels and then refined in the bottle for another year in the winery.

Bodegas Arrayán was founded in 1999 by José María Entrecanales at the spectacular Finca La Verdosa, an estate located in Toledo. From the beginning, the project focused on international varieties under the guidance of renowned expert Richard Smart, who conducted an exhaustive soil study and equipped the vineyard -26 hectares- with drip irrigation and advanced technology to optimize cultivation.

The vines, planted at about 500 meters of altitude on sandy and poor soils, benefit from a continental climate with warm summers, which gives the wines character and finesse. Today, under the direction of María Marsans and with winemaker Maite Sánchez leading the way, the winery continues to innovate and develop new projects beyond Finca La Verdosa.

Arrayán Selección 2020 pairs perfectly with tuna in tomato sauce or bean stew with pork snout.

The winery

Bodegas Arrayán

Bodegas Arrayán, the most personal initiative of the late businessman José María Entrecanales - now managed with great vision by his widow, María Marsans - was born from the dream of producing wine in a beautiful dehesa near Madrid, featuring 800 hectares of Mediterranean forest. In this unparalleled setting, part of the winemaking area of the Denominación de Origen Méntrida, a historic production zone primarily focused on the garnacha variety, Entrecanales sought out the world's best viticultural advisors to develop a comprehensive and environmentally sustainable project.

For the planting of the varieties, all of which were foreign and not widely cultivated in the area, the renowned businessman hired Dr. Richard Smart, a famous viticultural guru based in Australia, who traveled to Finca La Verdosa to conduct a thorough soil study. He positioned each variety where it would best express itself and equipped the 26-hectare vineyard with features such as drip irrigation and radiofrequency stations to regulate the plants' needs. Not content with shaping one of the finest vineyard gardens in the entire Peninsula, Entrecanales enlisted the collaboration of winemaker Miguel Ángel de Gregorio for the production of the wines.

Under the management of María Marsans and the new viticultural leadership of Maite Sánchez - one of the most prominent winemakers on the national scene - the winery has developed parallel projects outside Finca La Verdosa, focusing on the recovery of old garnacha vineyards.
