The monastrell grape shows its best in Jumilla, a region with a harsh and dry climate located at an average altitude of 650 m. Altos de Luzón 2022 is crafted with monastrell from organic vineyards, born from a Mediterranean-profile vintage that produces rich and energetic wines, with notes of ripe fruit and smooth tannins. The grapes come from the "la Melera" plot, a 43-year-old bush-trained dry-farmed vineyard located in La Venta del Puerto at 675 m altitude, with very poor sandy soil that provides small grapes with high concentration and good acidity.
The harvest was carried out manually and in small 10/15 kg boxes. Once in the winery, the clusters went through a selection table, and after vinification, the resulting wine aged for 12 months in American and French oak barrels.
With over a century of history, Bodegas Luzón has been, alongside the Gil family and Casa de la Ermita, a driving force in the modernization of the D.O. Jumilla, sharing the responsibility of placing monastrell among the most important varieties of Spanish vineyards. A cutting-edge winery that strongly embraces wine tourism and manages 1,200 hectares of vineyards.
The red wine Altos de Luzón 2022 (D.O. Jumilla) conveys a sense of terroir and reflects Bodegas Luzón's commitment to traditional cultivation. Perfect to pair with barbecue pork ribs or pickled partridge.
Cherry-colored with purplish tones, with a deep layer.
Clean and intense on the nose, aromas of fine woods, lactic (cream), spicy (vanilla) along with hints of shady forest and fallen leaves are perceived.
On the palate, it shows good structure, flavorful, with breadth and freshness, enjoying good balance and noble tannins. Its passage is gentle, with a long finish featuring toasted and smoky notes.
With over a century of history, the recent trajectory of Luzón places it as one of the revolutionary wineries in the D.O. Jumilla and the entire southeastern region of Spain. It is one of the most important wineries in the area along with Bodegas y Viñedos Casa de la Ermita and Juan Gil Bodegas Familiares, sharing the responsibility of elevating the monastrell variety as one of the flagship grapes of the national wine scene.
The origins of Bodegas Luzón stem from the successive union of winegrowers and producers in the Jumilla region since 1916, a cooperative effort that expanded, modernized, and became established as a winery until 2005, when Grupo Fuertes acquired the majority share of the company and undertook significant investments to equip Bodegas Luzón with the most advanced technology in favor of a well-cared-for and closely monitored vineyard. Today, Luzón is a cutting-edge winery strongly committed to wine tourism. It manages a total of 1,200 hectares of vineyards, of which 412 are owned.
