General Information

Condado de Haza has earned international fame for its reds, which express the full character and potential of the Tempranillo variety. The first vintage of the 20 Aldeas label, an organic Tempranillo aged in American oak, was that of 2018. We’re now offering you the second: 20 Aldeas 2019, a modern, elegant red that’s a faithful expression of the terroir it comes from thanks to the organic farming practised in this genuine chateau in Ribera del Duero.

20 Aldeas is based on the winery’s successful traditional recipe – Tempranillo grapes grown on its own vineyards and ageing in American oak – but includes organic farming practices to bring out all the elegance and complexity of the Tempranillo. The vineyards it comes from (a total of 164 hectares) lie in a privileged area of the part of Ribera del Duero in the province of Burgos, between Roa and La Horra. They’re planted with old vines (30 years) that grow at an altitude of 800 metres and yield grapes of very high quality. The wine was made using traditional methods, including destemming and spontaneous alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel vats.  It was then matured for 11 months in American oak barrels.

Owned by the Fernández Rivera family, Condado de Haza has been one of the most iconic Ribera del Duero firms for the past quarter-century. Located in Roa, beside the river Duero, it’s designed in the style of a Bordeaux chateau, with the vineyards surrounding the facilities. The estate, planted with nearly 200 hectares of Tempranillo vines, stretches across a south-facing hillside with poor soils. Its wines enjoy well-deserved fame; for example, the prestigious American magazine Wine Spectator judged Condado de Hazo to be the best Ribera del Duero on its Top 100 list in 2016.

20 Aldeas 2019 is perfect with lamb and potatoes or even oily fish such as tuna stew.

Creators' opinion

APPEARANCE: Clean and bright. Cherry-red with a violet rim. NOSE: Intense aromas of black fruit, blackberries and hints of dairy, with liquorice notes typical of the Tempranillo variety followed by dark-roast notes such as vanilla, coffee caramel and subtle hints of smoke from ageing in American oak barrels. PALATE: A potent wine that’s fleshy on the attack, with a good balance between tannins and acidity. Full mouthfeel with smooth, noticeable tannins that fill your mouth with fruit, rounded off by lingering dark-roast, liquorice, coffee caramel and toffee flavours. Long, pleasant finish.

The winery

Bodegas Condado de Haza

Condado de Haza is the second winery of the Familia Fernández Rivera in Ribera del Duero. Following the success of the parent winery (Tinto Pesquera), this family decided to expand its legacy. They found the ideal location on a hillside with poor soils and perfect orientation along the banks of the Duero River, in the municipality of Roa (Burgos), where the first vines were planted in 1987. On the same estate stands the winery, inspired by French ‘châteaux,’ with a structure designed by carving into a hill. Additionally, it features an underground bottle cellar where the wines rest in perfect conditions.

In 2008, the international prestige of the winery took a significant leap when Condado de Haza Crianza was included by Wine Spectator magazine among the 100 best wines in the world. Today, the winery has 200 hectares of vineyards, all of the tempranillo variety, the signature grape of the Familia Fernández Rivera. Its wines are made exclusively from estate-grown grapes. It produces the brands Condado de Haza Crianza, Condado de Haza Reserva Especial, and Alenza. These are red wines with long aging in oak, earning acclaim from both national and international critics.
