Teso la Monja

Marcos Eguren (San Vicente de la Sonsierra, 1959) leads, alongside his brother Miguel Ángel, one of the most prestigious Spanish winery groups: Viñedos y Bodegas Sierra Cantabria. As the fourth generation of a lineage of Rioja winemakers, Marcos – an oenologist – and Miguel Ángel – president of the company – initiated a series of key projects during the Rioja wine revolution in the 1990s. Today, they are behind some of the best wines of the denomination, such as La Nieta, Finca El Bosque, Amancio, El Puntido, Alabaster, and San Vicente.

The Eguren family continued to explore Spanish vineyards and arrived in the D.O. Toro in the 1990s, where they were at the forefront of modernity, opening new paths in winemaking that aimed to add great doses of elegance to wines historically known for their power. First at the Numanthia winery – where they achieved 100 Parker points – and later at Teso La Monja, the Eguren family has been a driving force behind the transformation of Toro.

Founded in 2009, Teso La Monja is a project based on a rigorous selection of vineyards. It encompasses 90 hectares of vineyards aged between 35 and 130 years, all located around Valdefinjas, one of the most prestigious municipalities of the denomination of origin. The vast expertise of the Eguren family with the Tempranillo variety, synonymous with the red grape of Toro, allowed them to apply in Toro a formula prioritizing elegance over the traditional robust reds of the region. Their mastery of grapes from very old vineyards – some of them ungrafted – combined with excellent wood handling, has ensured that the Eguren family is remembered for introducing an elegant ‘Toro’ to the world.

Their portfolio includes wines capable of competing on equal footing with the most renowned international reds, characterized by their unique personality and profound elegance, such as the top-tier Teso La Monja, Alabaster, Victorino, and Almirez.
