Garena Txakolina is an ambitious project born under the auspices of Bodegas Gorka Izagirre and the fantastic vineyard surrounding the Axpe-Goika restaurant, located in the municipality of Dima, on the borders of Urkiola and Gorbea, two of the most important natural parks in Vizcaya.
In Spanish, the name Garena means “what we are,” a true statement of intent that reveals its aspiration to become one of the leading names in the evolution of txakoli, without forgetting the tradition and culture so deeply rooted in this land.
An 11-hectare vineyard planted in 2008 and 2013 with the native varieties hondarrabi zuri zerratia (80%) and hondarrabi zuri (20%) forms the foundation on which Garena Txakolina is built. The vines, located at an altitude of 260 meters on steep south-facing slopes, grow in soils composed of limestone and marl, with a clay-loam texture. This composition provides the grapes with a well-defined acidity and great aromatic intensity, characteristics that also define their wines. The first vintage of Garena to be released was 2014.
