Egly-Ouriet is a prestigious family winery founded in the 1930s in Ambonnay. Francis Egly, the fourth generation of the family, has been managing the winery since 1982, producing wines (especially renowned for its champagnes) under the A.O.C. Champagne and A.O.C. Coteaux Champenois appellations.
The winery owns a total of 12 hectares of vineyards, of which 9.70, located in Ambonnay, Bouzy, and Verzenay, are classified as Grand Cru. The average age of the vines is 38 years, and 80% of them are of the pinot noir variety. Chardonnay and old pinot meunier are also cultivated in the village of Vrigny.
The style of Egly-Ouriet's wines has been clearly defined since Francis Egly took over the winery in 1982. Vineyard work follows the principles of organic and sustainable agriculture, and the winemaking process is characterized by its purity. Fifty percent of the fermentation takes place in oak barrels to allow the wine to age on its lees, without filtration, and a very low dosage is maintained (between one and three grams). The extended aging periods, far exceeding those practiced by the majority of Champagne producers, are also a hallmark of the house. All this results in champagnes of great finesse and pronounced fruit presence, a faithful expression of the varietal and the terroir from which they originate, described by critics as “Burgundies with bubbles.”
