Created in 2007, the D.O. Arlanza is a small geographical area adjacent to Ribera del Duero. Centered around the Arlanza River, the D.O. Arlanza occupies the central zone of the province of Burgos and also extends to the southeast of Palencia. It preserves the historical wine-growing legacy of the 10th century, when vineyards were already cultivated around monasteries, and it has 450 hectares of registered vineyards, divided into small plots mostly owned by family wineries.
In this region, the extreme climate –with significant thermal contrasts– promotes the optimal ripening of the grapes. Another distinguishing factor is the topography marked by high altitude, with vineyards located between 850 and 1,200 m. Under these conditions, mainly Tempranillo reds are produced, which share traits with those of Ribera del Duero but stand out for their high aromatic intensity and freshness.
Climate
The climate is continental, characterized by being one of the harshest and most extreme in Castilla y León.
Soil
Deep soils with a subsoil of soft rocks. The terrain is highly varied with undulations and slopes where the vineyard is cultivated. Sandy, siliceous, granitic soils and those formed by calcareous marls are abundant.
