Fourth generation of the family leading Familia Torres, Miguel Agustín Torres Riera (Barcelona, 1941) began his studies in Chemical Sciences at the University of Barcelona, and in 1959 he enrolled at the University of Dijon (Burgundy), where he specialized in Oenology and Viticulture, studies he later expanded during a year at the University of Montpellier (France).
In 1962, he joined the family company. He contributed to modernizing the Spanish wine sector by introducing winemaking techniques such as cold fermentation, cultivating international grape varieties, and producing great wines like Mas La Plana, Milmanda, or Grans Muralles. In 1979, he established a winery in Chile and, in the early 1980s, began the recovery of ancestral Catalan grape varieties, a project that is now being strongly driven by the fifth generation.
He has been the President of Familia Torres since 1991. Author of several books about the world of wine (such as "Viñas y Vinos," currently in its seventh edition), Miguel A. Torres Riera has received numerous recognitions for his work, such as the “Decanter Man of the Year 2002” award granted by the prestigious Decanter magazine and the “Personality of the Year” award in 2005 in the innovation category, granted by Wine International magazine, among others.
His concern about climate change led him to create, in 2008, the Torres & Earth environmental program and, in 2019, the International Wineries for Climate Action association. His environmental activism has also earned him several recognitions, such as being named one of the 100 global climate leaders by TIME magazine in 2023.
