Viña Salceda Selección Especial La Tejera Reserva 2020 is an exclusive red packed with all the personality of Rioja and, more specifically, the Rioja Alavesa subzone. We designed it in conjunction with one of the most important wineries in the area, Viña Salceda, solely from grapes grown in its best vineyard: Finca La Tejera. This outstanding estate is located in the coveted municipality of Elciego, where its old gobelet-trained vines are sheltered by the Cantabrian and Demanda mountains. And the grapes were given exceptional treatment at the winery: sorting tables and a gravity-flow system that preserves all their qualities intact. This is a Rioja that combines the best of tradition and modernity.

General Information

Viña Salceda Selección Especial La Tejera Reserva 2020 is the result of collaboration between Vinoselección’s technical team and the winemakers at Viña Salceda. A red that does justice to one of the best areas for cultivating the Tempranillo variety in Spain. It also has small quantities of Graciano and Mazuelo and was aged for 18 months in French and American Bordeaux barrels plus a further 12 months in the bottle.

Back in 2010 Vinoselección’s technical experts had the chance to taste among Viña Salceda’s Reservas a special batch of wine from a unique plot. The name of this vineyard is La Tejera. That year the first Reserva of this brand was released, the 2006 vintage, and we repeated the experience five more times. In view of the huge quality of the 2020 vintage we put the proposal to them again. The result is an exclusive and unique Reserva packed with all the personality of Rioja and, more specifically, the Rioja Alavesa subzone.

Viña Salceda (1969) is one of the firms responsible for modernising the D.O.Ca. Rioja, and is hailed as one of the architects of this Denominación’s worldwide rise to fame. The recent history of this boutique firm designed in the style of a château of Bordeaux – surrounded by vineyards – also has a lot to thank its current owners for: the Suqué Mateo family, reputed winegrowers. This family has been promoting Vins y Cavas Pereleda for more than three generations and currently owns other internationally famous wineries such as Chivite (Navarra), Casa Gran del Siurana (Priorat) and Privat (Cava). The group also makes wines in Ribera del Duero and Rueda.

Viña Salceda boasts an exceptional location in the prestigious municipality of Elciego, whose vineyards are sheltered by the Cantabrian and Demanda mountains. The vineyards are influenced by a combination of humidity from the North Atlantic and the extreme, dry climate of the central plateau. They grow at an altitude of between 410 and 450 metres, by the river Ebro and the confluence of the river Mayor, in calcareous-clay soil. An estate blessed by mother nature.

Finca La Tejera, Viña Salceda’s most important plot, is adjacent to the winery. Its vines, averaging 35 years old, are gobelet-trained and the predominant variety is Tempranillo. The soil is stony and alluvial due to its closeness to the river Ebro, but the clayey subsoil retains sufficient water for the summer season. All these attributes make Finca La Tejera an exceptional vineyard from which the grapes that went into making this exclusive red were selected.

Viña Salceda Selección Especial La Tejera Reserva 2020 (D.O.Ca. Rioja) is perfect with char-grilled or roasted red meats or mature cheeses.

With over forty years of history, Viña Salceda perfectly captures the story of the first wine revolution in modern Rioja. It is considered one of the wineries responsible for the global explosion of our most internationally renowned denomination of origin. In the past decade of the 1990s, ownership passed into the hands of the Chivite family, an illustrious Navarrese family who, with the acquisition of Viña Salceda, extended their domain to Rioja. Recently, it has been acquired by the Perelada group.

Viña Salceda is located in the municipality of Elciego (Álava), one of the nerve centers of Rioja Alavesa, internationally known for the prestige of its wines. Here, it oversees 40 hectares of vineyards. The queen of the vineyard is the tempranillo grape. The versatile climate of this Rioja subzone, alternating between continental and non-extreme Atlantic influences, allows the vineyard to enjoy unique conditions. Its soils have a dominant clay-limestone composition.
