Viña Real Fermentado en Barrica 2024 is a magnificent example of the great work being carried out by the winery owned by CVNE in Rioja Alavesa. The manual selection of viura grapes takes place at the vineyard, and the cold maceration lasts for about 12 hours to achieve greater aromatic extraction. After a gentle pressing, the must ferments in Hungarian oak barrels. Finally, this wine, certified under the D.O.Ca. Rioja, ages on its lees in the same barrels until its evolution is monitored through tastings to determine the moment for racking, clarification, and filtration before bottling.
In just over a decade, Viña Real has established itself as one of the most interesting wineries in Rioja Alavesa. Located on top of Cerro de la Mesa in Laguardia, it boasts the most modern technology dedicated to producing high-quality, modern-style wines, always under the auspices of its parent company, the legendary Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España (CVNE).
Viña Real Fermentado en Barrica 2024 pairs perfectly with all kinds of cheeses, white meats, and grilled or sauced fish.

Viña Real Fermentado en Barrica 2024 pairs perfectly with all kinds of cheeses, white meats, and grilled or sauced fish.
Pale yellow color, bright and clean. On the nose, it displays good intensity, with an expressive aromatic palette combining white and tropical fruits (apple, banana, and pineapple) with delicate aniseed, balsamic notes, and hints of sweet spices, a reflection of its barrel aging. On the palate, it is balanced and enveloping, with a silky texture and well-integrated acidity that brings freshness. The retronasal is persistent, fruity, and elegant, prolonging its memory on the palate.
The 2024 season was marked by a warm March, which advanced budbreak by about 10 days. However, April and May recorded low temperatures and rainfall, causing a vegetative halt and delaying veraison by 10 to 15 days, depending on the area. The harvest was particularly short due to low bud fertility and poor fruit set caused by cold weather, limited sunlight, and rain during flowering. It is the shortest season in recent years, only comparable to 2017. Despite the climatic challenges, the vineyard's sanitary condition remained good throughout the cycle. The forecast of meteorological instability accelerated the harvest, and the low yields resulted in grapes of excellent quality. The harvest of white grapes at Viña Real took place between September 18 and October 6.
Behind Viña Real stands one of the most solid names in the Rioja wine scene with significant international projection: CVNE (Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España). The renowned French architect on the global stage, Philippe Mazières, was the person chosen by its leaders to capture the aesthetics of this century-old winemaking house in the new Viña Real winery, established in Laguardia (Rioja Alavesa). Its philosophy was to seek a unique style that respected the winery's hallmarks, with a subtler character, evoking a more “Burgundian” profile in this new initiative.
CVNE (Haro, Rioja Alta) first launched the Viña Real brand on the market in 1920; however, at the end of the 20th century, it conceived the idea of creating a dedicated winery for this range and chose the subzone of Rioja Alavesa for this new project. Thus, the history of the Viña Real winery is relatively short: its facilities were inaugurated in 2004.
Viña Real combines tradition and modernity in its spectacular facilities made of concrete, wood, and stainless steel. This new building stands out visually for the enormous vat that dominates its structure, a space dedicated to winemaking. Next to it, two tunnels have been carved into the rock of Cerro de la Mesa (Rioja Alavesa), where the winery is located, designed for the aging of wines: one for barrels and another for bottles.
