After the success achieved last year with the 2016 and 2018 vintages, we present a wine that continues with the same line of production and ageing. Viña Real Cuvée Especial Reserva 2019 is a custom-made red wine, in close collaboration with the winery's winemaking management and the technical team of Vinoselección. This wine is fed by the magnificent vineyards in the area of Elciego and Laguardia (Rioja Alavesa), and perfectly blends the Tempranillo grape with a contribution of Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo.
A modern wine, where the expressions of the best grapes of Rioja Alavesa leave their mark and their fruit profile, which merge with the notes provided by the new and single use barrels where this wine is aged for 18 months.
Few wine brands in the world can boast of being more than a hundred years old. Viña Real belongs to this exclusive century-old club and is one of the few labels that have survived to the present day and that represent the concept of quality in Rioja wine and, more specifically, Rioja Alavesa wine.
Established in Laguardia, in the heart of Rioja Alavesa, the Viña Real winery perfectly combines tradition and modernity in its spectacular concrete, wood and stainless steel facilities. A winery designed by the renowned French architect Philippe Mazières, who was the person chosen by the managers of CVNE (Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España) to capture the aesthetics of this century-old winemaking concern.
A building that stands out visually for the huge vat that is the star of its physiognomy, truly a place for the production of wines. Next to it, two tunnels have been hollowed out of the same rock of hill, the Cerro de la Mesa, where it sits, and are used for the rest of the wines (one for barrels and the other for bottles), together with two other adjoining buildings (one for offices, tasting room and bottling line; and another, reserved for storage and more offices).
CVNE adopts its own style at Viña Real, looking for wines with a more subtle character and evoking a more "Burgundy" profile.
This red wine, Viña Real Cuvée Especial Reserva 2019, harmonises perfectly with dishes such as stewed meats with vegetables cooked in wine.
Viña Real Cuvée Especial Reserva 2018 is made from the best grapes grown in our vineyards located in Rioja Alavesa, chiefly in the villages of Laguardia and Elciego, and contains the Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano varieties. It was aged for 18 months in new and first-use oak barrels. Ageing took place in a very special cellar, as Viña Real owns two colossal underground tunnels carved out of the rock of the Cerro de la Mesa, where its wines are matured. 2018 was a very good year, with good acidity and freshness, great ageing potential and, all in all, excellent quality.
Behind Viña Real stands one of the most solid names in the Rioja wine scene with significant international projection: CVNE (Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España). The renowned French architect on the global stage, Philippe Mazières, was the person chosen by its leaders to capture the aesthetics of this century-old winemaking house in the new Viña Real winery, established in Laguardia (Rioja Alavesa). Its philosophy was to seek a unique style that respected the winery's hallmarks, with a subtler character, evoking a more “Burgundian” profile in this new initiative.
CVNE (Haro, Rioja Alta) first launched the Viña Real brand on the market in 1920; however, at the end of the 20th century, it conceived the idea of creating a dedicated winery for this range and chose the subzone of Rioja Alavesa for this new project. Thus, the history of the Viña Real winery is relatively short: its facilities were inaugurated in 2004.
Viña Real combines tradition and modernity in its spectacular facilities made of concrete, wood, and stainless steel. This new building stands out visually for the enormous vat that dominates its structure, a space dedicated to winemaking. Next to it, two tunnels have been carved into the rock of Cerro de la Mesa (Rioja Alavesa), where the winery is located, designed for the aging of wines: one for barrels and another for bottles.
