Viña Pomal is a century-old label, the standard bearer of classic Rioja in the world, whose first vintage was made in 1904. This year, to celebrate its 120th anniversary, the winery has changed the brand's image with more modern aesthetics and more reference to its origins, as we can see in this Viña Pomal Rosado 2023. A Silver Medal winning wine at the Global Rose Masters international competition. Essential and seductive.

Viña Pomal is among that handful of historic brands that have made Rioja great. This is a century-old label that has been able to adapt to the new times and is still among the elite. Since the last decade, it has also been made in a rosé version. Here is the new vintage: Viña Pomal Rosado 2023, designed with red Garnacha (70%) and white Viura (30%), traditional grapes of the Rioja rosés.
Viña Pomal Rosado 2023 is produced by bleeding. After destemming and crushing, the grapes were transferred to the tank where they underwent cold maceration for 12 hours, until the must achieved the desired colour. The tear must (obtained by gravity, without any mechanical pressure) was then separated from the skins, a process called "bleeding". The must was then fermented at a low temperature of 14º C to preserve the fresh and varietal aromas.
The grapes that make it up come from vineyards located in Rioja Alta, an area of Atlantic influence where these varieties achieve an ideal acidity to produce expressive rosés with a lot of freshness.
Located in the famous Barrio de la Estación de Haro, Bodegas Bilbaínas has represented Rioja classicism since 1901. In their hands is the ownership of the largest vineyard in Haro (250 hectares), the most important area of the Rioja Alta. In addition, it is one of the only châteaux in La Rioja with more than 130 hectares of vineyards around the winery. Viña Pomal is its emblematic brand. The winery also produces La Vicalanda and Viña Zaco; three labels that are present in more than 20 countries and that each year garner dozens of awards.
Viña Pomal Rosado 2023 (D.O.Ca. Rioja) is ideal to combine with smoked salmon or tapas such as Iberian ham, chorizo and cheese.
Brilliant with a pale pink hue. Subtle, with hints of strawberry, raspberry, violets and spices (anise, chamomile).
Structured and oily attack that adds length. The acidity of this wine makes it fresh and balances the structure in the mouth.
Located in the famous wine region of the Barrio de la Estación in Haro, Bodegas Bilbaínas is one of the historic and benchmark wineries in Rioja. Its origins date back to 1859, when the Bordeaux house Savignon Frères et Cie, fleeing the phylloxera plague, settled in Haro to produce and export wine to France. In 1901, a group of entrepreneurs from Bilbao acquired the facilities, also building a new and monumental winery with underground cellars. Thus, the Bodegas Bilbaínas company was definitively established.
In a short time, its wines gained a strong reputation. So much so that in 1925, this house was honored with the title of Supplier to the Royal Household and Heritage. In 1997, the winery became part of the Grupo Codorníu, undergoing a profound renovation of its facilities and vineyards, as well as a modernization of its wine styles.
Today, Bodegas Bilbaínas boasts an exceptionally extensive estate-owned vineyard in La Rioja: 250 hectares spread across the Haro region, within the subzone of Rioja Alta; and it has enviably solid brands that encompass different styles: from the most classic Viña Pomal, to La Vicalanda (Alta Expresión) and the more modern and youthful Viña Zaco.
