The white wine Viña Pomal Vinos Singulares Maturana Blanca 2019 is part of the Vinos Singulares collection from Bodegas Bilbaínas. A project with native varieties that highlights the viticultural richness of the Rioja terroir.
The selected maturana grapes for this Viña Pomal undergo spontaneous fermentation in concrete tanks, after which they are transferred to 500-liter French oak barrels, where the wine is aged on its lees for 4 months.
Although maturana blanca is considered one of the most ancestral varieties in Rioja (the earliest writings mentioning it date back to 1622), it was not until 2007 that the Regulatory Council authorized its use for making wines under the D.O.Ca. It was then that Bodegas Bilbaínas, under the umbrella of the well-established Viña Pomal brand, committed to this variety for one of its signature wines.
Founded in 1901, Bodegas Bilbaínas is considered one of the great national wineries. Located in the heart of the Barrio de la Estación in Haro, the latest chapter of this legendary winery began in 1997 when it was acquired by Codorníu Raventós, who brought a more modern vision and an understanding of current market preferences. An important renovation of its image and wine style was carried out, which also included the conversion of the old winery by the renowned architect Domingo Trías.
In appearance, Viña Pomal Vinos Singulares Maturana Blanca displays a pale yellow color with steely edges.
On the nose, it is fresh, with hints of chamomile, citrus peel, fennel, and stone fruits perfectly integrated with the subtlety of the barrel's toasty notes.
On the palate, it is gentle and fresh. Certain saline notes are perceived, balanced with the fruit. Voluminous sensation and very persistent.
Located in the famous wine region of the Barrio de la Estación in Haro, Bodegas Bilbaínas is one of the historic and benchmark wineries in Rioja. Its origins date back to 1859, when the Bordeaux house Savignon Frères et Cie, fleeing the phylloxera plague, settled in Haro to produce and export wine to France. In 1901, a group of entrepreneurs from Bilbao acquired the facilities, also building a new and monumental winery with underground cellars. Thus, the Bodegas Bilbaínas company was definitively established.
In a short time, its wines gained a strong reputation. So much so that in 1925, this house was honored with the title of Supplier to the Royal Household and Heritage. In 1997, the winery became part of the Grupo Codorníu, undergoing a profound renovation of its facilities and vineyards, as well as a modernization of its wine styles.
Today, Bodegas Bilbaínas boasts an exceptionally extensive estate-owned vineyard in La Rioja: 250 hectares spread across the Haro region, within the subzone of Rioja Alta; and it has enviably solid brands that encompass different styles: from the most classic Viña Pomal, to La Vicalanda (Alta Expresión) and the more modern and youthful Viña Zaco.
