Villa de Corullón 2023 is one of the flagship wines from Descendientes de J. Palacios, a winery where Álvaro Palacios and his nephew Ricardo Pérez showcase their absolute mastery in crafting Mencía red wines year after year. Villa de Corullón is made from grapes sourced from small plots in the municipality of Corullón, where old Mencía vines (50-80 years old) grow on steep, slate-covered terrain. It undergoes 10 and a half months of aging in French oak.
Enchanted by the uniqueness of the Bierzo terroir and the native Mencía grape, Álvaro Palacios and his nephew Ricardo Pérez Palacios arrived in this region in 1999, with the firm purpose of showcasing its full potential to the world. Today, that goal has been more than achieved, thanks to the exceptional quality of their wines, crafted for the enjoyment of all kinds of palates and budgets, from the outstanding La Faraona to the more accessible and popular options like Pétalos del Bierzo or this Villa de Corullón 2023.
Also in Bierzo, the Palacios family has managed to find the most hidden vineyards and produce splendid wines. Architects of the great revolution taking place in Bierzo, the young Ricardo Pérez Palacios—one of the descendants of the Palacios Remondo dynasty from La Rioja—and his uncle Álvaro Palacios—one of the gurus of Priorat—embarked on the adventure of crafting a great wine in Bierzo from the native mencía variety. And they succeeded.
They began producing in 1999 after acquiring a few hectares of vineyard and a small winery in Villafranca del Bierzo, which has been restored. They make their wines from mencía grapes, sourced from a vineyard located in a privileged environment with 27 hectares divided into almost 200 plots, planted with old vines of great quality on very steep soils, which Ricardo and Álvaro cultivate using biodynamic methods. This way, they produce fresh, fragrant, juicy, and lively wines, a true reflection of the viticultural personality of the Bierzo hills.
