This is an exclusive red from one of the leading wineries in Spain and a key name in the D.O. Ribera del Duero: Matarromera, made by and for us. Melior de Matarromera 12 Meses 2018 is a wine grown in the vineyards of the mother company of Bodegas Familiares Matarromera, the origin of the important winegrowing group that currently owns several successful firms in various regions of Spain.
Back in 1988 Carlos Moro, a well-known businessman of Castile and León who hailed from a winegrowing family, laid the foundations of this famous company in one of the most sought-after Ribera villages: Valbuena de Duero, which is home to some of the best Tinto Fino or Tempranillo vineyards in the world.
Beside the winery and in the nearby villages of Valbuena and Olivares de Duero, Matarromera currently own more than 160 hectares of vines that grow in lime soils. Sixty of them, planted in 1997, were chiefly used to make the winery’s more affordable wines. But they’ve grown up now and the amazing 2018 harvest yielded increasingly complex and deeply nuanced grapes. We wanted to use the best bunches from these vineyards to make Melior de Matarromera 12 Meses 2018, an exclusive red that will fascinate you.
Gorgeous cherry-garnet-red colour with slightly brick-red hues at the rim.
The nose is notable for its fragrance and intense aromas. Initial notes of jammy red fruit like cherries and cranberries are followed by tantalising hints of spice (green pepper) and slightly smoky background notes. Clear resiny notes in the finish are reminiscent of green tea, together with notes of eucalyptus and broom.
Full, tasty and well-structured on the attack. Notable for its very fruity profile with ripe, slightly sweet and varietal tannins that lend it a velvety, round and very ripe mid-palate. Full, with a long, powerful lingering finish, with predominant hints of red fruits and resiny notes.
Melior 12 Meses 2018 is a Tempranillo that’s a reference to its own name: ‘The Best’, and stands for the good work performed by our Valbuena de Duera winery. The grapes it’s made from mainly come from our own vineyards located in Olivares and Valbuena de Duero, on the site of the plots where the Cistercian monks of the monastery of Santa María de Valbuena in San Bernardo cultivated their own vineyards back in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, after being painstakingly chosen and no doubt checked, as attested by their writings from the period. Melior came into being quite a few years ago to embody an aim and today it is not only a differentiated brand with a well-established image of quality but furthermore expresses an identity and position with respect to the perception of its attributes and values.
Following the winemaking tradition of his Castilian ancestors, Carlos Moro founded the Matarromera winery in Valbuena de Duero (Valladolid) in 1988 with a clear objective: to create quality wines using the most advanced technology while respecting traditional winemaking methods. The main challenge undertaken by Carlos Moro was his commitment to new barrels for aging his wines, an initiative that was novel at the time in Ribera del Duero. Another key to Matarromera's success is its excellent vineyards, located in a legendary area of the D.O. Ribera del Duero: Valbuena de Duero.
Matarromera was the first winery of Carlos Moro and the seed of one of the most important wine groups in this country: Bodegas Familiares Matarromera. The first red wine produced by the winery—an ancestor of the brand we now know as Melior—achieved the title of "Best Wine in the World" at the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) competition held in Turkey in 1995. Currently, Bodega Matarromera has 150 hectares of its own vineyards and controls an additional 160 hectares.
