Ugalde Reserva 2019 (Excellent vintage) is crafted from a traditional Rioja coupage: tempranillo (the predominant variety), accompanied by graciano and mazuelo. The grapes come from selected vineyards with moderate yields to obtain smaller and more concentrated clusters.
The alcoholic fermentation lasts for 10 days, followed by an 8-day maceration with skins at a controlled temperature of 28 ºC. The malolactic fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks. Subsequently, the wine ages for 24 months in American oak barrels, with 5% French oak, and completes its refinement with a minimum of 12 months of bottle aging.
In 1882, Don Felipe Ugalde began his project in Haro, where he founded what was then known as Bodegas Felipe Ugalde, a family business that would become the seed of the current Bodegas Ugalde. Today, 135 years later, his legacy remains alive just 10 kilometers from Logroño, in the area of La Venta del Jalón, under a concept inspired by the “château” model: a winery surrounded by 70 hectares of its own vineyards. This privileged location, with poor soils and an Atlantic climate, offers ideal conditions for vine cultivation.
The red Ugalde Reserva 2019 (D.O.Ca. Rioja) pairs well with semi-cured cheeses and pork tenderloin.
Deep plum red with high intensity and vibrant reflections.
On the nose, it reveals notes of ripe black fruits, balsamic hints, and subtle toasty nuances.
Rounded tannic structure on the palate, with complexity and maturity. Balanced, flavorful, and enveloping. Subtle spicy nuances. Long finish, well-structured, expressive, and persistent.
Bodegas Ugalde belongs to Rioja Vega, a company founded in 1882 by Felipe Ugalde in Haro. After a series of business ups and downs throughout the 20th century – including a name change – the company was acquired in the 1980s by Grupo Príncipe de Viana and definitively entered modernity.
