General Information

Izar in Basque means star, and as such shines the Txakoli Itsasmendi Artizar 2020, a complex, full-bodied, wild, and long-lived white wine, a faithful expression of the two terroirs of limestone, sandstone, and marl from which it originates.

This wine from Bodegas Itsasmendi is the result of the exceptional work of sustainable viticulture carried out by the winery based in Gernika. This work aims to harmoniously integrate the vineyard into each ecosystem of the 15 plots in which it is divided. The ultimate goal is to obtain grapes of distinctive quality, such as hondarrabi zuri, the queen variety of the D.O. Bizkaiko Txakolina, which were used in this Txakoli Itsasmendi Artizar 2020.

After selecting the best fruits, traditional winemaking was carried out, including fermentation in a 2000-liter French oak vat and aging the resulting wine on its lees for 13 months. The result is an aged txakoli, with unique typicity and elegance, a perfect companion for baked fatty fish and white meats.

Tasting notes

Txakoli Itsasmendi Artizar displays a straw yellow color with golden and greenish reflections.

On the nose, it stands out for its floral notes, fine white stone fruit, and mineral hints.

The palate entry is smooth and elegant, showcasing great volume and complexity. Powerful, creamy, vibrant, and with a very long finish.

Creators' opinion

The winery

Bodegas Itsasmendi is one of the leading wineries in Vizcaya, renowned for its magnificent txakolis. It was back in 1989 when a group of winegrowers decided to join forces to revive the cultivation and production of the traditional Basque white wine. Their collective effort materialized in 1995 with the inauguration of their first facilities in Muskiz, which, with the turn of the new century, specifically in 2002, gave way to the current winery in Gernika.

The 35 hectares of Itsasmendi vineyards are located in an absolutely privileged setting: the mountainous slopes near the Bay of Biscay, part of the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve. Divided into 15 distinct plots, with varying soils and even microclimates, the winery's vineyard is undoubtedly the cornerstone of a project that is among the most authentic, personal, and at the same time, most innovative in the D.O. Bizkaiko Txakolina.

Environmental respect, through sustainable viticulture that always seeks the highest quality, and the use of native varieties such as hondarrabi zuri and hondarrabi zuri zerratia, together with the expertise in the winery, make Itsasmendi's txakolis complex, rich wines in constant evolution and as natural as the spectacular environment from which they originate.
