Torre Muga 2021 is crafted with Tempranillo grapes complemented by Mazuelo and Graciano. The grapes come from selected vineyards located in the municipalities of Villalba de Rioja, Briñas, and Labastida, with clay-limestone and alluvial soils.
Manual harvest. Fermentation takes place in wooden vats, separating the grapes by variety and origin, without temperature control and using indigenous yeasts. Once the alcoholic fermentation is completed, maceration can be extended for 2 to 3 weeks depending on each variety and plot. This is followed by malolactic fermentation in new French oak barrels from the Allier and Tronçais regions, and then the aging process, which lasts for 16-18 months depending on the variety. Afterward, the final blending of the wine is carried out. Before bottling, a light clarification with fresh egg whites is performed.
Muga is one of the most reliable and recognizable names in Rioja. Founded in 1932 by the family that gives it its name, the Mugas, it is now led by seven cousins from the third generation. Its history began in a modest winery located on a central street in Haro, but in 1970 it inaugurated new facilities in the famous Barrio de la Estación in the same town.
Muga is characterized by its commitment to traditional winemaking: gravity racking, clarification with egg whites, and all red wines are made, fermented, and aged in oak (there is no stainless steel in the winery). It is also one of the few Spanish wineries with its own cooperage. However, in the vineyard, it embraces modern technology, monitoring the vines.
This winery is also distinguished by its expertise in aging, especially long aging, as its red wines exceed the aging times stipulated by the Regulatory Council of the D.O.Ca. Rioja. Its portfolio features two distinct lines: a more classic one with the Muga and Prado Enea range; and a more modern one, with Torre Muga and the 'top' Aro. To these, the new Flor de Muga label is added, available in white and rosé versions. All of them are wines with elegance in their DNA, enjoying great acclaim.
The
Creators' opinion
The 2021 vintage in Rioja, and especially in Rioja Alta, was characterized by more favorable climatic conditions compared to recent years, which allowed for the production of red wines with great balance and a pronounced varietal expression. The wine presents a medium-high layer and an intense red color, reflecting its youth. High intensity on the nose, with a notable presence of ripe fruit, as well as hints of blackberry and strawberry. These are complemented by notes from its aging in high-quality French oak barrels, contributing elegant aromas of toast, coffee, and chocolate. On the palate, the wine is smooth and very balanced, with the same fruity and aging notes reappearing as on the nose. The acidity and alcohol are perfectly balanced, offering a harmonious mouthfeel. The tannins are soft and elegant, contributing to a silky and pleasant sensation. The finish is very long and persistent, leaving a sense of fullness that reaffirms the excellent quality of this vintage.

It boasts exceptional vineyards of tempranillo, garnacha, graciano, and mazuelo, located in the valleys of the Oja and Tirón rivers. In these lands, soil and climate come together to offer exceptional conditions for the vine, something the Muga family takes full advantage of to craft their renowned wines.
