La Tarara Crianza 2019 is the latest vintage of one of the great wines made by Bodegas Obalo, a renowned Rioja firm based in Sonsierra, in the municipality of Ábalos. There, surrounded partly by a spectacular ocean of vineyards and partly sheltered by the Cantabrian mountains, it produces a range of wines in which respect for local tradition is a primary concern.

La Tarara Crianza 2019 is a red with very characteristic Rioja style, a modern Crianza that combines fruit and oak and is of impressively high quality year after year. This version is one of the best vintages of the century in Rioja: 2019, rated Excellent in the D.O.
Its name conjures up a popular Spanish song, La Tarara, of which many singers have brought out versions. It invites listeners to celebrate life by dancing – very much like the philosophy that inspired this red, of which only 69,000 bottles are produced per year. It’s made solely from Tempranillo grapes grown in poor soils on sunny, southern-facing slopes where calcareous-clay soils with a high proportion of pebbles and gravel for optimum draining are predominant. After harvesting the grapes went through two sorting tables and were destemmed and lightly pressed. This was followed by alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in vats, after which it was transferred to French and American oak barrels, where it remained for 12 months.
La Tarara Crianza 2019 is a modern red with rich aromas, deeply layered and lingering flavours. Its sensory characteristics make it an ideal accompaniment to dishes that are not heavily seasoned.
Bodegas Obalo (2006) is a project of Avanteselecta, a wine group that produces wine in the main Spanish designations of origin. It was born with the philosophy of capturing the essence of tempranillo from old vines cultivated in a wine-growing region considered one of the best in the world: in the heart of the Sierra Cantabria, in a locality like Ábalos, among the villages of San Vicente de La Sonsierra, Labastida, Samaniego, or Páganos.
The winery (with modern design and practical, innovative facilities) is located right on the border of La Rioja Alta, although most of its vineyards are in Rioja Alavesa. Obalo has 2 hectares of its own vineyard and 40 hectares of controlled vineyard, all of the tempranillo variety and located on the slopes of the Sierra Cantabria, south-facing, in valley areas, and in the undulations of the landscape, on terraces. These are old bush vines with an age ranging from 40 to 90 years. Bodegas Obalo dedicates most of its production to the international market.
